“Just putting it out there.” Ephraim winked.

As another man entered the room, power choked the atmosphere. Alpha Camus’s raven hair gleamed in the sunlight streaming through floor-to-ceiling windows, the streaks of silver around his temples popping brighter. Faint crinkles radiated around his light green eyes, as calm and crisp as a frozen pond in the winter.

“Hello, Fane.” He nodded at the demon shifter. “It’s been some time since you’ve darkened my doorstep.” His tone was cool and indifferent but not cruel.

“Alpha Camus.” Fane moved closer to me, his arm brushing mine. “It has been a while.”

The alpha’s gaze landed on me. “You must be Tatum. Barric informed me that I should expect a visitor.”

“Well, here I am.” I shoved my hands into the pockets of my faux leather jacket and shrugged.

Ephraim angled in the alpha’s direction. “She’ll remain with us for the duration of her stay. We’ll take good care of her.”

Fane bristled at his uncle’s words. “I’ll make sure she’s adjusting. She’smyresponsibility.”

I scowled at him. “I’m capable of taking care of myself.”

Fane sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “You know what I mean.”

“We just have to ensure that you’re adjusting to shifter life.” Ephraim gently patted my shoulder.

If I ever actually transformed into a wolf…

Camus stepped toward me, his tall frame towering over my petite one. “It’s nice to meet you.” He extended his hand for me to shake as his alpha power slammed into me.

I reached out and shook his hand, keeping my composure while his influence weighed on my shoulders. My eyes remained locked on his, though. After several long moments, the edges of his lips twitched into a crooked smile.

He released my hand and studied the tattoo on my neck. “I didn’t expect anything less from you, Fane.”

The demon shifter remained stiff by my side. “It’s not all me.”

I almost smiled at him. Almost.

Camus walked to a wet bar on the right and poured himself a glass of whiskey. His faded jeans and the red flannel button-down couldn’t mask his sturdy physique. He was slightly less wide than Barric Hartwell, but the muscles coiling as he moved would definitely do some serious damage. “Anyone want a drink?”

“I’ll take one.” Ephraim strolled toward him to receive a glass.

Fane and I both declined.

“Lemonade then?” Camus turned to Fane. “You used to drink that stuff by the gallon.”

Fane nodded. “Sure.”

“I’ll have the same,” I said before he could ask.

The alpha grabbed his phone from his pocket and tapped out a message. “Constance will bring your refreshments in a moment. Have a seat.”

The older woman had vanished after letting us in. I’d thought she was his wife, but apparently, she worked for him.

Ephraim lowered to the chair on our left while Fane and I sat on the cushy leather couch, our thighs touching, causing an electric current to ricochet between us. When I tried to move away, Fane’s hand clamped down on my thigh.

“Uh, is there a problem?”I asked through our link.

He frowned until his attention fell on his hand gripping my leg.“Oh, I didn’t realize—”

“Is Tatum your intended mate, Fane?” Camus took a seat in the chair opposite us.

I opened my mouth to answer—absolutely not—but the demon shifter’s fingers dug into my thigh.
