“We’re still working some things out.” Fane gave a tight smile. “Taking it slow.”

“I see.” The alpha gave a skeptical look as he noticed the barely nonexistent space between us and Fane’s death grip on my leg. “Does Marissa know you’re here?”

The name instantly sent warning bells through my head.Marissa…?

Fane shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“That’ll be interesting when she finds out about this.” He motioned his finger between Fane and me.

Son of a bitch. The woman Fane had gone to see the night I snuck out of Logan’s and got attacked at Wrath & Ruin was in this pack.

“What’s the deal with you and this chick, Maverick?”

He winced at the venom in my voice.“Nothing. Absolutely nothing.”

“Why don’t I believe you?”

Fane rubbed the center of his forehead.“Because you’re stubborn.”

“Here you are.” Constance reappeared with two servings of lemonade, the ice tinkling against the glasses as her hands trembled.

Was she really that afraid of Fane?

“Thanks,” he muttered and plucked the cup out of her shaking grip.

I took mine as my lips thinned. “He’s not going to attack you.”

“Teague,” Fane hissed, giving me a warning look that said if I continued, he’d toss me over his shoulder and drag me out of the house.

“What?” I set my cup on a coaster on the wooden table. “You’ve been nice, polite even, since you walked in, but she acts like you’re going to shift and tear her throat out.” Technically, he didn’t need to shift to do that.

Constance’s face paled, making her freckles more prominent. “I, uh, he… Sorry.”

Fane rubbed his forehead again. “I apologize, Constance. She’s just—”

“Protective.” Camus shared a quick smile with Ephraim.

That wasn’t the word Fane had been looking for.

“You’re definitely going to be a strong female wolf, Tatum.” Camus hummed and rubbed his freshly shaven jaw. “A good match for Fane. Not many would feel the need to protect someone as strong as him.”

I clamped my mouth shut and sank into the couch cushions as my cheeks flamed. Were these two men trying to become matchmakers?

Fane cleared his throat and finally pried his hand from my leg. “Ephraim told you about Joseph?”

Camus sipped his whiskey and then placed the crystal tumbler on the table, resting his forearms on his knees. “Your uncle filled me in. No one’s heard from him in four days. It’s not like Joseph to leave his family without a word.”

Ephraim ran his hand over his copper hair. “Alpha Barric visited the Wintercrest pack while we were there and informed us of the situation spreading from Savannah.”

“We had a meeting at raven headquarters just before I left.” I ignored the pang throbbing through my heart when I thought about being unceremoniously kicked out. “No one has been able to establish a pattern. The victims seem to be at random.”

The alpha grabbed his drink again and took a sip. “Things are rarely random in this world.” He stared at the amber liquid before looking back at me. “How long were you with the ravens?”

I studied the scars on my palms from killing Fane’s brother. “A couple of years, but I was only initiated a few months ago.”

“She was better than most, even before The Calling spell.”

My head angled toward Fane, my chest squeezing at his compliment.
