Will.

He had a sister. A twin. She had my other sword. What happened to her?

Another whine echoed, and I glared at the high demon. “I’ll find you one day and kill you slowly.”

With my parting words, he pivoted and vanished through the forest.

I sprinted to the struggling wolf and kicked the agrigon into a tree. Bark flew as the monster hit, but he quickly recovered and scuttled in my direction. My boots dug in, and a snarl burst out of my mouth like a precursor to his death.

My hand swiped through the air, shredding his side. He screeched and stumbled into a dead sub-demon. Before he could regain his footing, I flipped him on his back. My muscles felt like steel as I crawled onto his belly, his six sharp legs scraping and tearing at me.

A sadistic laugh oozed up my throat as I sank my talons into the flesh just below his neck where his hard exoskeleton didn’t offer protection. His screech died as I ripped his head off, chucking it aside like a piece of trash.

As the forest grew quiet, I climbed off the dead beast. Agrigon bodies littered the battleground, and black and red blood gleamed on tree trunks, piles of colorful leaves, and green vegetation. Four shifters, naked in human form, sprawled out among the trees.

They were dead.

A few sub-demons still crept about, debating their options. My mouth opened, and I released a roar that rivaled the one Fane had let out when Dominic threatened me my first night in Mohan Wilds. Something sinister twisted around mine, causing evenmyscalp to prickle.

Sensing the threat, the agrigons inched back and scurried into the trees to escape me.

“My brother.” A weak voice sounded from the left, and as I stepped closer, the shifter who had my other sword emerged within a network of tree roots. A gaping hole tore into her thigh, and blood covered half of her face. Her arm was twisted backward, probably broken. “Is Will okay?” she wheezed and motioned to the ginger wolf I’d torn the agrigon from.

She should be worried about herself.

“Please,” she whimpered.

The unconscious wolf transformed into his human shape as I marched to him, bent, and studied his injuries. So broken. So many wounds. So much blood.

It was wonderful.

Something crawled over my neck, and I reached up to flick off the bug, but found nothing. Buzzing filled my ears like a static radio station trying to come through. My fingers brushed over my throat again, and an electrical bolt crackled from a spot on the left.

An image of my beautiful beast flashed in my mind. He always tried to keep me from unleashing the destruction I craved. And he wanted me to come back.

Back from where?

One day, I’d make him see how much fun we could have together. We’d drowned in blood and violence and have sex on a bed of thorns while surrounded by our victims.

I licked my lips, tasting his spice and sin flavor all over my tongue.

Soon.

My fingers brushed the black mark he’d given me, and another electric jolt rippled over my neck.

Fane.

Maverick.

My lids closed tightly as memories tried to surface through the crimson fog and rage. I breathed, concentrating on his rough voice willing me back in control. Even though he wasn’t here, I felt his presence wrap around me.

I opened my eyes, blinking as pines and oaks came into view, dark liquid splashing their trunks.

Where was I? What happened?

My gaze lowered to the broken form I’d thought was wonderful just a moment ago.

But he wasn’t wonderful. Not like this. None of this was.
