Logan scoffed and motioned his hand toward the demon shifter’s fresh and clean appearance. “And what are your reasons for dressing up?”

“I’m wearing jeans. That’s not dressed up.” Fane rolled his shoulders and cracked his neck. “You can think whatever you want, Logan.”

“Who’s Marissa?” I asked as claws raked against the inside of my chest like a monster trying to break free.

Fane fiddled with the label on the water bottle and then checked his watch. “None of your business.”

A feral growl built in my throat, but I choked it back before it became audible, or so I thought. Fane’s gaze yanked in my direction as if he’d heard it loud and clear.

I wasnotjealous. That was completely stupid and irrational. This guy wanted to torment me and then kill me. I didn’t care how many women he decided to screw.

“Well, don’t just stand there.” I waved toward the door. “Go see your mystery skank.”

Logan snorted. “Skank is too kind of a word for Marissa.”

Fane banged his water on the counter and marched out of the kitchen, slamming the door behind him.

The ugly emotions rolling through me and the images of Fane with this mystery chick had my body going hot and cold. I needed a distraction, and I wasn’t going to find one stuck in this apartment.

* * *

My heart pounded, and my palms grew sweaty as I stood in the middle of my room in Corvin Manor. As soon as Logan hopped into the shower, I took off, knowing this could end in disaster. If anyone spotted me, I was screwed.

What if Coltrane found out the Infernal Sol was stuck inside of me and decided the best course of action was putting me down, destroying the demon amulet with me?

I wasn’t entirely opposed to the idea, but if Fane could find a way to separate it from me, I might still have a chance of living and paying my debts to this world. Of course, there would be Fane himself to contend withandhis stupid bite.

I shook my head and trekked to my closet, grabbing a bag to take a few things back to Logan’s. And then I’d leave.

That was what I’d told myself until familiar voices resonated in the hall. Had I been human or just a raven, I wouldn’t have been able to hear them, but now they came in loud and clear.

“You haven’t heard from Tatum?” Coltrane’s tone was calm and even, without any hint of concern.

“No. I thought you said she was on some secret mission I wasn’t privy to.” Hawk sounded almost jealous, but he paused as his aunt’s words sank in. “Did something happen to her? Should I be worried?”

I tiptoed toward the door, carefully opened it, and peered out. Hawk and Coltrane stood several feet away in a small alcove tucked into the hall.

“I’m sure she’s fine.” She patted his shoulder and quickly clasped her hands behind her back to hide the slight tremors running through them.

The color drained from Hawk’s cheeks. “You’d tell me if something happened to her, right, Aunt Anna?”

Captain Coltrane regained her composure and smiled. “Of course. Tatum’s fine. She can handle herself in any situation. It’s a complex mission, so I expected a few days to pass before I heard from her.”

When I took the mission, I thought I’d be back in no time, but fate—or rather Fane—had other plans.

Coltrane patted Hawk’s shoulder again. “I’ll see you later. And I’ll let you know when she’s back.”

Hawk watched his aunt march down the corridor and vanish around the corner. He dragged his hands through his hair and pulled on the roots. I couldn’t breathe as the panic showed on his face, and the urge to run to him infiltrated my muscles.

Just as he turned in this direction, Roxie bolted out of her room and grabbed him.

“There you are.” She yanked him into her room and shut the door.

Nausea swept over me, and before I could stop myself, I darted back into my room, opened my window, and hopped out. My boots scraped against the bricks as I scaled the tiny ledge toward her window.

This was such a bad idea.

My pulse raced, and my breathing fogged the glass as I peered inside, their voices carrying through the panes.
