“Yeah, right.” He didn’t seem like the type. Plus, he was ademon.

“How to Lose a Guy in Ten Daysis one of my favorites. So isThe Proposal.” His eyes brightened as he chuckled, and the sunlight streaming in through the windows glinted on the gold in his hair, making him appear more angelic than anything demonic. “You can’t go wrong with Betty White. I loved her inLake Placideven though horror’s not really my thing.”

He was dead freaking serious. Instead of lurking in the shadows and slurping down souls, this guy liked to watch romantic comedies. I’d never seen or heard him mention his supernatural appetite. “Don’t you need souls to live on Earth?”

Logan shrugged. “I get enough here and there. Killing or turning desperate humans into soulless assholes isn’t my thing either.” He leaned forward, reached his finger toward my chin, and closed my mouth. “You’re going to catch flies with that thing open.”

I gently pulled out of his grip. “Is that why you have a home here and the Underworld?”

“Maybe.” Instead of picking a movie, he set down the remote. “I have a gym. Want to spar?”

“What kind of question is that?” I jumped to my feet. “Of course I want to spar.” Any physical action would help take my mind off the shit show my life had become. And it would help me forget a certain demon shifter whose image kept popping into my mind.

Loganand I circled each other, my bare feet sinking into the black mats covering the center of the large, open room with cream walls and the same light hardwoods throughout the rest of his apartment.

The place was definitely bigger than I thought. Maybe it had a spell like Corvin Manor.

“Having fun?” Logan watched my every move with a lazy smile.

I gave a noncommittal shrug. “Kicking your assiskind of fun.”

He scoffed. “Kicking my ass? I don’t think so, Tate. I had you on your back twice.”

“It doesn’t count when I rolled onto my back on purpose.” I wiped sweat off my forehead with my hand. We’d been sparring for two hours and letting off some steam felt good. “I took you down three times.”

Logan’s laugh reverberated through the room. “I can see why Fane is so annoyed by the situation.”

All my humor evaporated. “Yeah, I’m so irritating.”

“You’re hardnotto like,” he said. “That’s why he's so grumpy.”

I blocked his hit to my shoulder. “He’s not always this pleasant?”

“He has his moments.” Logan shifted out of the way of my jab. “He’s struggling because he doesn’t want to like you.”

Fane Maverick liking anyone except his family or Logan was hard to imagine. “He just wants to find a way to get the Infernal Sol out of me. Once that happens, we’ll probably fight to the death.”

“I doubt that.” Logan swept his leg toward me, but I jumped over it and slammed my fist into his ribs. He shuffled out of my reach. “And you forgot about the bite.”

As if the mention of it woke it up, the tattoo on my neck tingled. “He didn’t bite me to make me his mate or anything. He didn’t even want to do it.”

The demon shrugged. “Sometimes Fane doesn’t know what he wants.”

“Andyouknow?”

Logan winked as a crooked grin spread over his lips. “I’m his best friend. Of course I know.”

I darted to the left and struck his shin with my heel. “If you’re his best friend, then tell me about him. What happened to his parents? And how did he end up shifting into animal form when most demon-shifter offspring don’t.”

“No one really knows why Fane is such an anomaly.” Logan rolled his shoulders and shook out his arms. “He’s never needed to consume souls to live on Earth either. He has the ability to gain energy and life from others, but he doesn’t use it.”

Fane never had that hungry look in his eyes like his brother had the night I killed him. Even though he could be an evil prick, now that I’d gotten to know him a little, I couldn’t picture him slurping down human souls.

“He lived with his demon mother until he shifted for the first time at ten,” Logan continued, rubbing his shadowed jaw as his gaze became pensive. “She had no choice but to send him to his father’s pack so he could learn how to be a wolf.”

“The scars.” I motioned my hand down my body. “Are those from fighting shifters?”
