The high demon dropped a small trash can next to Fane and a collection of towels on the coffee table. “You two play nice while I’m gone.” He winked and disappeared down the hall.

Fane kneeled next to me and ripped the right leg of my jeans all the way up to my crotch.

Good thing I was wearing underwear. “What are you going to do, squeeze the venom out?” I stared at the wound as blood oozed from it. “I think it’s too late for that.”

Fane’s head dipped, and his mouth latched onto the bite.

“What the fu—”

He sucked hard, and blinding pain erupted through my leg as a scream burst out of my throat. My vision flashed crimson, and Logan’s living room blurred. Fane spat blood and venom into the trash can and returned to my leg.

My nails dug into the arms of the chair, tearing the fabric. Fane sucked again, and I gritted my teeth against the curses teetering on the tip of my tongue. My body ran hot and cold as he pulled and squeezed until my head swam.

After a few minutes, Fane dipped a rag into the bowl of water and wiped the blood from my leg to examine the wound. “That might be all of it.” He also cleaned the blood from his mouth, cracked a water bottle, swished a few times, and spat into the trash can.

I picked my head up from the back of the chair and moved my leg around. “I don’t know.”

He handed me the water and studied the wound as I downed a couple of sips, trying to ignore the fact that I was drinking after a nightworlder. “Does it hurt?”

I passed him the bottle. “Shouldn’t you know?”

Instead of responding to my question, Fane lowered his face to my thigh and sniffed. Could he smell the poison? His nose brushed along the inside of my leg, too close to my crotch, and I sucked in a sharp breath.

He froze, having heard it, and his gaze slowly lifted, piercing mine like hot daggers. “Poison’s all gone.” His low, rough voice vibrated my sensitive area, and a flurry of waves assaulted my lower half.

I swallowed hard. “That’s good.”

He murmured in agreement, the sound a resonating rumble that quivered through my thigh and right between my legs. I couldn’t stop the soft gasp from slipping out, and the evil smile splitting his lips made it clear he knew exactly how he affected me.

Fane’s tongue licked a smooth, unmarred part of skin, his hot breath sweeping toward the apex of my thighs. My pulse soared, and I bit my lip to force back a moan. His hand moved up my thigh, his thumb circling the bruise I’d woken up to.

Invisible fingers that felt exactly like his slowly slid up my hips and stroked beneath the waistband of my jeans. My eyes widened as the realization punched me in the gut.

Last night had most definitely happened.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

Panic triedto override the pleasure from Fane’s touch—the real and phantom one—but my body wouldn’t allow anything to disrupt the intense sensations. Last night had not been a steamy dream or fantasy.

Fane Maverick and I had most certainly toyed with each other like ghostly specters tormenting their victims in the night.

I liked his torment way too much.

“How are you doing that?” My words came out in a breathy whisper.

Fane’s mismatched irises scorched into mine. “Doing what?”

“Don’t screw with me, Maverick.” Flames licked everywhere, and it took all my control not to arch back and beg him to move those phantom touches lower. “You know exactly what I’m talking about.”

He pressed his thumb into the bruise he’d given me last night, sending a throb of pain that quickly melted into pleasure through me. “Teague, I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

I tried to kick him off, but he grabbed my other leg and held me in place. “Is this some freaky demon thing I don’t know about? Can you do this with other people?”

“Canyou?” He snickered. “I love how you assumeI’mresponsible for whatever this shit is when you’re the one carrying around an ancient demon amulet full of power.”

“Ha! So you admit it.” I motioned toward my torso where those invisible fingers continued drawing circles across my ribs, puckering my flesh.

Fane shrugged. “Like I said, I have no idea what you’re referring to, Teague. You must have bumped your head while fighting those demons.”
