“I’m fine.” I clutched the railing as we hit the last step.

I wasn’t fine. That sub-demon was poisonous, and his toxins burned through my veins. It was a baby, so one bite might just make me sick. Or I could die.

Fane shoved open another door, and we darted onto a second-level exterior walkway and then rushed down the cement stairs to the cobbled road below. Sweat beaded my skin, and my clothes stuck to me. The humidity in the air made it ten times worse.

“This way.” Fane took off down a backstreet on the right.

I ran after him, trying to ignore the throbs pounding in my leg. We headed farther from the historic district, the buildings zooming by as my vision blurred. “Where are we going?”

“Logan has a place here.” Fane peeked over his shoulder at me, his brows knitting as he noticed my slowing movements.

My mouth had lost all moisture, and my limbs trembled. “Will he be there? I think I prefer his company to yours.” I transformed my sword into a dagger and stowed it in my boot. “No, I don’t think it. I know it. Logan actually has—”

Shadows slinked around the edges of my vision, and I stumbled. The ground rose, but before I hit, strong arms hauled me into the air.

A string of curses rushed out of Fane. “That poison is moving through your system too quickly.”

“I’m fine.” My feeble attempt at dislodging myself from his grip earned me a scowl. And then his words registered. “How did you know the sub-demon was poisonous?”

He sprinted down the street, keeping a firm hold on me so I didn’t bounce around. “Just a lucky guess.”

* * *

Pain pulsated in my leg,and my eyelids felt like weights had been glued to them. I wanted to pass out, but I could have still walked through the hall to Logan’s apartment all on my own.

“You can put me down, Maverick.” I squirmed in his arms as he marched across the gray and burgundy corridor, sleek pewter sconces lighting the way. “I’m not an invalid.”

“I walk faster than you.” His deep timbre vibrated my chest. “Besides, I’d rather you not faint.”

My mouth twisted into a scowl. “Would you like me to puke on you? I feel those reflexes coming alive.”

“I’ll drop your ass like a piece of hot silver if you so much as gag.” He stopped and knocked on a door with his boot. “Logan, hurry the fuck up.”

The demon dramatically yanked the door open. “No need to be rude.” His attention fell on me, and the humor vanished from his expression. “What happened to her? Don’t tell me you tried to kill her already.”

Fane barreled into the apartment decorated like Logan’s house in the Underworld with soft green, tan, and brown hues. “A poisonous agrigon demon bit her. The toxin is spreading, and she’s in a lot of pain.”

My head jerked toward his. “How do you know I’m in pain?” He could have guessed it was poisonous by the side effects, but how did he know my leg felt like it had been tossed in a frying pan with extra oil?

He clenched his jaw so hard the tendons looked like they might explode out of his flesh. “I can feel it.”

Logan glanced at him and then back at me. “Uh, come again?”

Fane unceremoniously dropped me onto an oversized leather chair and pulled my legs onto the ottoman. “Help me in the kitchen, Logan.”

“Wait a damn minute. Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” My voice had risen to a shrill pitch. “You canfeelmy pain?”

“Yes, it seems I can.” Fane marched into the open kitchen across the room with Logan on his heels. The demon shifter snatched a bowl from one of the maple cabinets and started filling it with water. “I don’t know why.”

Logan grabbed a few hand towels from a drawer. “This is an interesting side effect. Do you think it’s from your bite?”

“Like I said,I don’t know,” Fane grumbled. If looks could kill, Logan would be six feet under.

My heart violently pulverized my rib cage, slamming into my bones. What else could the demon shifter feel from me? Emotions?

Flames licked at my cheeks, and a giant rock plunged to the bottom of my stomach. Could he feel mylust?

“It’s probably more to do with the Infernal Sol than my bite.” Fane placed the bowl on the coffee table along with two water bottles. “Logan, go rummage up some bandages.”
