Page 78 of Savage Bite

Two circled me, their irises an ominous shade of radioactive green. Razor-sharp teeth flashed, and they licked their lips as saliva dripped down their chins.

They were definitely flesh eaters. And they wanted a taste before dragging me back to Karn.

Not happening.

“Are you two done deciding who’s going to eat me first?” I asked, my sword lifted and poised for battle. “Karn probably doesn’t want you to kill me, but I bet I taste delicious.”

The one on the left, a male, flared his nostrils. “I’m sure Lord Karn won’t mind if we have a little taste.”

The female on the right laughed, tossing her electric-purple hair. “At least three bites each. That should save enough of her for the lord.”

How big would those bites be? “Who’s going to go first?”

The male snarled. “Enough of this. I’m taking her first.”

“The hell you are.” His female counterpart’s eyes brightened from green to piss yellow, the pupils stretching into long, black slits. “She’s mine.”

As the two bickered back and forth, I struck the female, carving her chest open. Onyx blood as thick as syrup poured out of the gash. I ducked her swinging claws as she attacked, wet gurgling sounds spewing out her mouth.

My fist crushed into her cheek, and then I slammed my elbow into her ribs. Her howl of pain erupted around us like thunder, colliding with her male partner’s roar. If he was this angry I cut her, what would he do when I killed her?

Only one way to find out.

“You won’t be getting takeout tonight.” I slashed my sword into her neck. Black blood sprayed my face as her head spun off and rolled across the ground.

The male’s bellow pierced my eardrums, rattling my teeth.

“You’re going to pay for that.” His giant footsteps pounded in my direction.

I pivoted as his fist struck out, hitting nothing but air, and then I slipped behind him. My blade sank into his neck. As he choked on his own blood, he gawked at me over his shoulder like he couldn’t believe I’d dispatched him so quickly.

“See you in hell.” I forced the sword the rest of the way through, a shower of black liquid washing over the ground.

“Teague!”

I turned around at Fane’s warning as a dux demon heaved a grotesque creature at me. My pulse rocketed, and I dove to the ground to avoid the hit.

The baby agrigon, a sub-demon, bounced on the concrete and then whirled around, those six spindly legs scuttling across the roof in my direction like a giant spider the size of a cocker spaniel.

Shit!

I scrambled to my feet, but another agrigon jumped on my leg, his pincers sinking into my thigh.

A hiss burst between my teeth as pain exploded through my right leg. I yanked the sub-demon off and punted it across the roof. The other one was on me in seconds, but before he could take a bite, I ripped it off and jammed my sword into his back. His high-pitched death screech made me wince.

More shrieks rang as the other one raced toward me again, pincers ticking and yellow, nightmarish eyes zeroed in on the blood dripping down my thigh.

“You’re not getting another piece of me, you little shit.” As soon as he was less than a few feet away, I lunged and impaled his tough exterior with my sword. His screams rebounded over the roof.

Good thing loud music played through the night or the humans having a carefree evening below would have heard the horrible death sounds.

“Let’s go!” Fane grabbed my arm and tugged me toward the other side of the roof, demon parts scattering the ground.

“Someone has to clean this up,” I said, trying my best not to limp.

Fane kicked a door open, busting through the thick lock like it was paper instead of steel. “We’ll worry about that later.”

We hurried down a flight of interior stairs maintenance crews usually used as pain tore through my right leg from the bite wound. I choked back the cry attempting to unleash from my mouth, but Fane’s steps faltered as he glanced back at me, his attention falling to my bloody leg.
