We sprinted between two historic buildings, rushing over cobblestones. Music and laughter trailed from bars and restaurants, and the aroma of delicious food spilled into the air as the light in the sky disappeared.

“Hold on to me.” Fane didn’t give me time to question him as he snatched my arm, swung me around to his back, and leaped onto the second-level walkway.

“I’m quite capable of jumping and climbing.” I dug my nails into his bicep when he clamped his hand on my arm to keep me from hoping down. “I have super strength. No need to treat me like a spider monkey.”

Fane snickered. “You can’t do this.” Talons extended from his fingers, and he sprang onto the brick wall of the building, climbing all the way to the roof without a single ledge or foothold.

No, I couldn’t do that, but the bastard didn’t have to look so smug when he set me down.

I fixed my shirt that had bunched up. “How do you think they found us?”

Fane jerked his head to the left, and I followed him, passing air conditioning vents and rows of exterior ductwork. Good thing he didn’t scale the building on the other side of the street. We would have tumbled off the pitched roof.

“Karn’s underlings have probably been skulking under the radar, praying Ruin’s guys don’t spot them. They just got lucky tonight.” He sniffed the air, and his muscles tensed. “They’re coming.”

My pulse spiked as I searched the roof for a familiar symbol while low voices seeped from the edge of the building. The demons must have climbed the same way we had.

Fane shoved me toward the left.“Hide behind that chimney stack.”

As his words sank through our mental connection, I gave the most dramatic eyeroll possible.“I’m not hiding, you asshole. I’m a raven. I fight.”

“But you don’t even have—”

I dashed toward a large metal vent on the left where a tiny, barely noticeable feather had been painted onto the silver surface. My knees hit the ground, and my hand scraped the rough cement as I rummaged beneath a crack, bits of dirt and rock tearing my skin.

When my fingers wrapped around hard metal, a smile tugged at my lips despite the pain. “Bingo.” I yanked out the knife and slid my finger over the rune on the hilt to transform the blade into a sword. “You were saying?” Ravens had weapons stashed all over the city just in case we found ourselves without one.

Fane gave an exasperated huff. “Don’t die.”

No sooner had those words tumbled from him did several dux demons climb over the roofline. Their glamours faded, revealing horns, scales, and terrifying teeth.

My muscles tensed, readying for combat. I didn’t plan on dying tonight, but as the number of enemies grew, our chances of walking out of here unscathed shrank to a tiny, narrow chance.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

The nearest demon attacked Fane, and I held my breath as the two engaged in a vicious battle, the meaty smacks of flesh and cracks of bone reverberating through the night. His eyes glowed, and pupils elongated as the beast within drew closer.

While distracted, another demon slipped by him to charge me, but Fane spun and caught his horns, yanking him to the ground. Talons sprouted from the demon shifter’s fingers again, and he sliced through his opponent’s neck like warm butter. Black blood spurted out, and the demon’s head hit the ground, followed shortly by his body.

Fane could have carved me open the first night we met. Why had he held back with me?

A demon tried to grab my hair, jerking my thoughts back to the fight, and I ducked to miss her claws. What a bitch move. I lifted my sword, shearing off her arm.

Her scream pierced the night, and blood gushed out of the gaping wound, splattering her leopard print dress. “Karn wants you brought in alive, but accidents happen.” She snapped her jaws.

“Yeah, they do. You should be careful where you walk.” I kicked her shin, and she fell to the ground on one knee. “You might slip.” My sword swung and penetrated her neck, lopping off her head.

Another demon charged me, the guy reaching at least seven feet tall, seven and a half if you counted his horns. He slammed me into a chimney stack so hard stars spotted my vision.

Thanks to The Calling spell—or Fane’s bite or the Infernal Sol—I recovered fast and dodged his massive fist plunging into the bricks where my head had been.

My skull would have caved in from a hit like that.

I rolled between his legs, slicing my sword over his Achilles tendon. His shriek shook the ground beneath my feet before he went down like a lead weight. I pivoted and didn’t hesitate to hack off his head.

Growls penetrated the night as more demons climbed the roof.Shit. How many of Karn’s minions were hiding in Savannah? Fane had already taken out five with those lethal talons. I could only imagine what he would do in his wolf form.

I sprinted forward, whipping my sword through the air and decapitating another demon. And then another.
