Deus jerks forward the moment her hand touches him, like she’d smacked him with acid. He whips around as he slowly backs into the vehicle. “What the fuck was that?”

“Affection,” I say. “It’s disgusting, I know.”

Deus looks suspicious as he backs up into Ellison who seems unsure of what to do. I kind of feel like he’s realizing that this wasn’t what he signed up for.

The back of the armored vehicle is set up with bench seats that face each other, so I sit down next to August, Lex sits next to me, and Ellison and Deus sit across from us as everyone else crams in. A medical team starts asking all these questions as they grab, touch, and prod August and me.

“Should we be leaving?” I ask August. “I mean… like the killer hasn’t been caught… we have no idea who set the bombs off. Were they bombs? Did someone use their power to blast a hole into the wall?”

“I… don’t know,” August admits. “But I can’t stop time if something happens again. And your power seems to be depleted.”

“The rest of us are still able to do stuff, though,” Deus says.

Lex just fiddles with his shirt as he stares at his lap. “I feel awful that I couldn’t do anything,” he says.

“August had time frozen for most of it,” I explain. “There’s really nothing you could have done, so don’t stress over it.”

“I had no idea where you two went,” Deus says as he leans back.

Once the medical team has verified that we’re not dying, I turn to the others. “I’m going to be honest… though I know how to fuck shit up with my power, I have absolutely no knowledge at all on how to find a bad guy, butI’ve read books about it, which should pretty much just make me a certified detective.”

The others seem oddly suspicious about this. “You were reading a book about a serial killer the other day… are you also a certified serial killer now?” August asks. “And the day before that you read a book about a man who turns into a donkey. Are you an ass specialist now too?”

“It’s a good thing you’re beautiful because your sass is just…” I shake my head.

The back door opens, and Wyatt looks in with Valerie at his side.

“Valerie, we decided we’re going to be of help and not just get tucked away in this armored atrocity,” August declares.

Valerie promptly waves him off.

“Landon, we just got a call from the United facility. Nolan is wanting to talk with you,” Wyatt says.

“Like call him?” I ask.

He shakes his head, looking uncertain. “He insists on seeing you in person, for some reason.”

“Interesting… okay. Yeah, we’ve all determined I’m of absolutely no help, so I can go right now. August, you okay alone, though?” I look over at August who doesn’t seem to love the idea, but how much safer can I be than inside a facility run by Superheroes United?

“I’ll go with you.”

“No, sir, you are not. You’re telling us everything that happened,” Valerie says.

“I’ll go with Landon… Deus and Ellison are much more helpful here,” Lex says, looking dejected. I can tell it kills him a little inside that he sees himself as useless.

August stares at Valerie with his jaw stubbornly set. “But if we’re staying, we’re not hiding in here. We’re helping. We can handle ourselves.”

“Okay,” Valerie says, finally caving. “This way.”

She ushers me over to a car that looks average but is decked out with every safety precaution available. August gives me a kiss. “Please be careful.”

“You too.”

He waves toward Deus who looks prepared to shoot absolutely anyone. I have a feeling that if someone sneezed wrong, he’d shoot them. “I… don’t think I need to worry,” August assures me.

I give him a hug anyway and get into the back of the car with Lex.

Wyatt says something to the driver before he gives him a wave and the car pulls out. The two men in the front are guys who are in Valerie and Wyatt’s team, the driver being Ned, the same guy who will forever be known as the driver who ran over my brother.
