“Oh! I already forgot. Silly me,” Deus says.

“Ha. Ha. Sosilly,” Ellison says, clearly sarcastic, but Deus is oblivious,of course.

Ellison shoves Deus away from the detained man as I sink back down on the ground before burrowing my head on August’s lap.

“I’m so sorry,” I say, my hand digging tight into his leg.

“For what?” August says as he grabs me and rolls me a bit so he can look at my face.

“I couldn’t stop them. You could have gotten shot, and I wasn’t able to do anything. I couldn’t help. I just… fuck, August.” I hate feeling useless. I hate feeling like I’ve put him in danger.

August grabs my face in his hands. “I couldn’t do anything either… this is what happens when you overextend yourself. You pushed yourself so hard your brain basically shut down, so you can’t blame yourself for that… for saving all of these people.”

“I should have saved one less,” I growl as I stare at the guy who is starting to question all of his past choices in life.

“I know,” August says as he rubs blood off my face. “You okay?”

“Yeah. My brain is mush, but I’m all good… I think… I’d be better if Lex burned that man a bit.”

August rubs my back gently as people come rushing in. “You don’t need violence to feel whole,” he assures me.

“I need lots of violence,” I grumble.

The moment the team is on us, they immediately surround August, which includes me, since they’re sworn to protect him or some weird shit. I usually would remind them that my babe’s ass is fully protected, but today, I welcome them.

Lex grabs my hand and pulls me up onto shaky feet before wrapping a supportive arm around me. Ellison helps August up as Deus stares at the man who looks too half-dead to be a threat. I’m pretty sure if he even blinks wrong, Deus is going to kill him.

As we get out of the building and fully see the destruction the bombs—and I—caused, I quickly look away and pretend I had absolutely nothing to do with it. I can only imagine the money it’ll take to clear upthismess.

Valerie comes rushing onto the scene and grabs August into a hug.

“Are you okay?” she asks, sounding a bit anxious.

“Yeah, I’m fine!” August assures her with a smile.

“Get him in the vehicle now! Quickly! Once he’s inside, get the medical team in to verify that he’s fine.”

August grips her shoulders. “Valerie, I’m fine. We have to figure out what happened here. The man we went to see was killed and—”

The guards physically drag August off and shove him into an armored truck that’s swarming with a medical team ready to make sure he’s not dying or something.

Valerie grabs my face in her hands, looks me over, and then smashes my face against her as she hugs me. It’s weird and awkward and I think we’re both happy when it ends. “God, you look like death.”

“Thanks,” I say.

“You’re paler than normal. Like death.”

“Thanks.”

“It looks like you’re having withdrawals from the way you’re shaking.”

“You’re a sweetheart.”

“We can’t leave yet,” August says as he tries to escape the truck. “We haven’t found the people who did this—”

“Just… get inside for now and let the medical team help you,” she orders. “It’s safest in the vehicle.”

She gives me another hug and tosses my body into the armored truck. No one else gets told how grotesque they look as they’re pushed inside, but Deus does get a scoff and then a gentle pat on the back.
