“Your brother’s not going to jump out in front of me again, is he?” Ned asks.

I grin at the memory. “Honestly, I couldn’t tell you. It’s literally a tossup.”

Lex glances over at me. “I feel shitty that I was of no help.”

“Don’t feel shitty, Lex. August couldn’t take anyone else when he froze time, it would have depleted his power too quickly, and then with any less time, I don’t think I could have done what I did. It’s fine.”

He nods but is still fumbling with something. When I look down, I realize he’s got his very own “lucky” doll that Deus must have given him at some point.

“Why?” I ask in disbelief.

“It’s nice,” he says, but my eyes drop down to what’s written on the chest.

“Did you write this?” I ask.

He looks a little embarrassed. “Maybe…”

“Lex, you don’t make a fucking voodoo doll of yourself. What the hell?” I say as I try to take it from him, but he refuses to hand it over and even grips it tighter.

That’s when my phone rings, and I see that it’s August, so I answer with, “Hello, babe, already miss me?”

“I sure do!” Deus says before tossing on, “Babe.”

August’s voice immediately rides over Deus’s. “Landon, there’s been a bit of a problem… please tell me you can use your powers.”

I hold my hand out and find that even trying causes stabbing pain in my head to the point that I nearly pass out. I grimace as I grab for my head. “Nope.”

“Fuck.”

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

AUGUST

As I watch the car sweep Landon away, I sigh.

“God, you’re so lovesick, it’s disgusting,” Deus says.

“Having a heart is not disgusting,” Ellison says. “The way he refuses to hide his affection and is openly eating Landon’s face in public is what is disgusting.”

I gape at both of them while wondering who the hell eveninvited them. “We nearlydied. I think it’s wholly appropriate to be able to kiss him when we nearlydied. And it was a simple kiss on the lips! There wasn’t even any…” I shake my head.

“But we didn’t die, so…” Deus scribbles something on a paper before handing it to me. It’s a new invoice for the guy he nearly killed inside the building, but at the very bottom (beneath the friend discount) is an “Eye-bleaching” fee. Clearly, me kissing Landon was so dreadful that I now have to pay for it… literally.

I sigh and pass the paper off to Valerie who crumples it up and throws it at Deus’s face.

Deus snatches it before it hits, flattens it out, and adds a “Don’t be a bitch” fee before passing it back. I make sure to give it back to Valerie who glowers even harder but smacks it against Wyatt’s chest, who folds it neatly and tucks it in his pocket.

“There is nothing else that I want you guys to do here, so let’s head back to headquarters and get a full report—” Valerie starts, but thetskout of Deus makes her hesitate.

“You’re telling me you’re just going to walk away? There might be clues—”

“Yes, that the detectives will handle. This group is not made up of detectives. You guys have done your part.”

Ellison stares at the destruction intently, maybe wondering if “our part” was a bit too destructive. “The way the bomb was set to go off in the area that the body was found in tells me that someone either set it up to explode when we went in or could possibly have placed it there to hide the body but our arrival upset the flow of things.”

“We need to see if we can find the reporter’s body,” I say.

“We will… I just don’t like you guys out here where you’re vulnerable,” Valerie says as she keeps trying to usher us back toward the armored vehicle.
