Landon grumbles but gives him a nod. “Fine.”

“And then,” Deus starts, “they chip away at your weaknesses, they show the city that you’re not quite the infallible hero they thought you were, and then they see how far they can go to destroy the very reason their loved ones are dead. But we also know they’re amateurs, which means we can manipulate them. The people they hired, like me, don’t have a valid reason for doing it beyond money, if you get me? The man who put the price on your head is like a handler who then reaches out to people who are the equivalent to hitmen. The original people hired the handler to do the dirty work, which distances them from it. So the reason I know that the people who took Lex are the family members is because when they were suddenly personally involved in the abuse and pain of another, they couldn’t do it and let Lex free.”

“So we use that information to find them,” I say.

“Right, I mean, we have a damn good idea who the people involved are now that we know who the victims are. Ellison, do you think you could figure out where some of these family members live?” Landon asks.

“Already have their addresses,” Ellison says.

“Then let’s go,” I say. “I want to speak with Dave’s wife first. Dave could have possibly been involved, which is what could have led to his death.”

“What do we do about suits?” Lex asks as he picks at his nail polish. “I… know we’re not really working with Superheroes United, but I’m also terrified I’m going to burn you guys up.”

Landon glances over at him. “Lex… I really don’t think you would. You have more subconscious control than you let yourself believe. But if you’re afraid, then we can wear the suits and look like idiots.”

Lex raises an eyebrow. “You just don’t want to wear the suit because you think you look like an idiot?”

Landon gives him a hearty nod. “One hundred percent. August, on the other hand, looks fucking delectable in everything and nothing.”

Deus groans and I quickly look away.

“Hold on…” Lex says as he glances between Deus and me. “What happened with you two?”

“Let’s go,” Deus says, immediately turning invisible.

Ellison hesitates as he grabs for Deus, but Deus is already out of reach. “What’s going on?”

“Nothing,” I say. “I’m with Deus on this. Let’s go.”

“Deus saw August’s weenie,” Landon says with a shrug. “It was while August was making me call him Moistman.”

Lex hesitates before making a face. “I regret asking. I regret even caring. I wish I’d never even talked to any of you. Ellison, you seem normal. Let us leave.”

“It wasn’t… like that!” I growl as I run after them.

“It was totally like that,” Landon says. “I was like ‘No, August, it makes me feel weird calling you Moistman,’ but he just kept insisting!”

“Who votes we leave Landon behind?” I say as I hold my own hand up.

“Now come on. You can’t be sad that I’ve told them the truth about your ways, August,” Landon says. “They’ve been blind to them for far too long. It’s wonderful that they finally get to see the real you.”

I hurry after the rest of them. It works out well because Landon only has energy for making the lives of others harder, so keeping up with anyone speed walking isn’t in his daily plans, meaning that we all make it to the car before he does. I get into the driver’s seat and lock the door.

Everyone in the car looks over at Landon and he grabs the door handle before noticing that it doesn’t open. He tries again, like he doesn’t think we could have possibly locked him out. Then he lowers himself so he can glower through the window.

“Excuse me? I think you’re forgetting something very important here,” Landon growls.

“What did we forget, guys? Did we forget something?” Lex asks.

Deus shakes his head. “I think I forgot how amazing I am,” he says, which makes Landon glare all the more.

“Ha ha. Funny. Open up.”

“And if we don’t?” Lex asks.

I realize quite quickly why Landon is a bitch to win a fight with as he lifts the entire car up off the ground.

“Fuck,” Deus says.
