“Oh my god. No! Landon, put us down!” Lex yells as he grabs onto the seat in front of him, hugging it to himself.

My phone rings and I see that it’s Landon. Knowing that it’d probably be worse for us to ignore it, I accept the call. “Hey babe, how are you today?”

“Oh, don’t heybabeme. Do you wanna see how high you can go?” Landon asks, sounding quite evil.

“Well… I bet it’s quite high,” I say.

“It’s very high,” Landon replies as the car tilts a little and Lex lets out a squeal. Ellison’s the only one who is one hundred percent unaffected by this. He’s taking notes on his notepad as he scrolls through his phone and I’m not even fully sure he knows what’s happening.

“Yeah, but… you love us too much,” I say as the car starts floating down the road. I have absolutely no idea where he plans to take us, but I’m also positive he doesn’t have the energy to walk too far.

“My heart is broken after your absolute savagery. I simply asked for love, and instead, this is what has happened. Apologize to me before I’m forced to put you all on the roof.”

“You are amazing,” I say.

“More groveling,” Landon growls.

“I really think you’re super badass, and I wish I was as badass as you,” Lex says.

Deus leans forward so Landon can hear him better. “I made you a lucky doll.”

“Hmm… I feel like I need more groveling from the others. Deus is excused after my beautiful August doll,” Landon says.

Ellison sighs extremely loudly, leans over, and unbuttons my shirt. I’m so confused, I just let it happen. And then he goes, “August has his shirt off.”

The car drops, coming to a rest on the road with Landon’s face smashed up against the window. “He sure does. Well, hello there, gorgeous.”

He unlocks the door with his power and climbs in the back seat.

“Now may we leave?” Ellison asks.

“I’ll permit it,” Landon says as he reaches forward and gently smacks my bare stomach.

“This is already a disaster. We haven’t even left the neighborhood yet, and it’s an absolute mess,” Ellison realizes. Then he sighs loudly, which makes me feel like he’s disappointed in all of us. When none of us react, he smacks his notebook down on the dashboard. “When we arrive, I alone will go to the front door with my illusion. Deus and Landon are not permitted anywhere near the door because they cannot be trusted speaking to humans.”

“That sounds minorly unfair and weirdly accurate,” Landon grumbles.

“I’ll be positioned with a clear view of the door to murder them,” Deus assures us.

Oh no. “These are the families of the victims, Deus, we’re notkillinganyone,” I say.

“The moment you allow yourself to sympathize with the enemy is the moment you open yourself up for mistakes and possible death. Many people have gone through tragedies; you can’t allow yourself to become a victim in the hopes it makes their tragedy a little more bearable.”

I hesitate, wondering why Deus is trying to show me reason. Everything he says makes sense, it really does, but it’s hard for me to close off my mind to the suffering they’ve been dealt.

“I think you should listen to him,” Landon says as he leans forward. “He may look and act like his head is empty, and he might watch you when you’re naked, but he does have some good things to say too.”

“I don’t watch naked people! Sometimes, I accidentally wander upon them but it’s not my fault,” Deus says. “Why do people just get naked so much?”

I nod in agreement, not to the naked part, but about listening to him. They’re both right. I need to stop letting my guilt rule me. At the end of the day, these families lost someone they cared deeply for, but their revenge has gone beyond what it ever should when they started risking the lives of others. They put a price on our heads which has resulted in many dead by Deus’s hands. I mean, one could say that if they were willing to kill us, they weren’t good people, and who’s to say who else these hired men and women have killed, but more are dead because of their revenge.

“Anyway, we don’t know if they have people on hand, so I’m going to speak to themalonewith my illusion and go from there, okay,Deus and Landon?” Ellison asks.

“I don’t love that I’m suddenly getting grouped with the weird guy,” Landon mumbles.

Deus seems to love it, though, as he tries to give Landon a high five.
