“You planned to. Don’t think I forgot your confession.”

“But there’s the difference. I didn’t do it.”

“I’m done talking if you refuse to believe me,” I said, my voice overcome with sadness.

“It wouldn’t matter if I did. I have my orders.” Levi sounded determined.

Steam enveloped us as we argued. We’d showered together so many times before that it felt more than natural, even as we were in a heated discussion. Taking the soap, I lathered his shoulders with my hands. I traced the designs of his tattoos as if I could wash them away. I went up his neck as he went lower and got to my navel.

Not odd at all, as he still threatened to take me back to Tennessee and certain death. I would not be going down without a fight. I would shoot him if I had to. If I could pull it off and not kill him.

“If you can’t believe me, ask your daughter. I told her I would save you and I did. I figure you owe me. You should offer to repay your debt,” I joked, trying to lighten my own mood.

Levi laughed at that, but his disposition quickly returned to spite. “I’ve not spoken to Haven. I ain’t allowed to. My club’s holding her and my other girl’s hostage until I return with you.”

His words punched me in the gut. With everything I had heard through the grapevine, I hadn’t known anything about his daughters being used as leverage.

“They wouldn’t?” I started, not able to even say it. That they would hurt his girls. Not his own club. Kingpin wasn’t a monster. Was he? That had always been Levi, here.

Frowning, he shrugged. His mind was a thousand miles away, in Tennessee with his daughters, as it should be. “My President was pretty shaken up. The raid you called threatened everything he holds dear. Everything of mine too. So, I get it. He’s already sent a crew after me because I’m taking so long.”

“They’ll kill you?”

“By all accounts, I fucked up. Wanting my revenge, I got my brothers killed.”

Holy shit. They would undoubtedly kill him.

“They’ll kill me if I’m lucky. Bury my body at a farm in Franklin, Tennessee, in the pig shit. Most likely, they’ll rip the backpack off my hide. They’ll drag me behind their hogs to peel their logo tattooed on my back clean off. I’ve witnessed it plenty of times. They’ll hang me in the barn to make sure I get no relief. If I survive, they break me some more until they tire of it. If I get out alive, I won’t want to live. Hell, I’ve taken part in kicking a brother out. It’s not pretty. With me being his Enforcer, I’m sure Kingpin has big plans for my demise. I can’t blame him.”

Fuck. Unable to look at him, I turned.

Levi began massaging and washed my back. He changed the subject. “So, if you didn’t betray me, how did you end up with this gig?”

“I told the truth. Not to Arkansas, but to the big dawg, Scar. You’ve heard of him.”

He lingered, rubbing my shoulders as the water warmed us. “Yeah. New guy took over for The General, their President who was murdered. Head of your Mother Chapter. Your club doesn’t work like ours. The General ruled all your chapters.”

“Like Scar tries to now,” I said, starting to explain.

Levi turned me in his arms. “You told him about us?” he asked, his eyes searching my face. “They hate me.”

“No. Not about us. Not like that. I didn’t tell him I like to shower with our enemy. I told him that Killer was trying to use me to start a war with the Royal Bastards MC in Nashville. I told him about my mission. You were mentioned, but I didn’t tell him about my feelings for you. I ain’t stupid.”

A smile played at the biker’s lips when I mentioned my feelings. “He doesn’t want war?”

“No. But he has one, a civil one at the very least. Arkansas Gods have practically gone rogue. My position ain’t as much of a reward as it is protection. My life is the reward.”

“From whom?”

“From everyone. Your club. Mine in Arkansas. Though Scar rewards those loyal to him. He showed up after Arkansas ambushed y’all in Nashville. I begged for my life.”

Levi took my meaning. “The Gods captured you?” he searched my body like he could see what they did.

Not all scars are visible.

“Yes. Thankfully, Scar was there, or I wouldn’t be standing here. Oh, they did enough. Look at my nose.” I tried to show him how crooked it was now from them breaking it. “But I would have been raped fifty times over and killed if it hadn’t been for Scar.”

“Sounds like you’re in love,” he said in jest.
