I shook my head. “He has an Ol’ Lady already. I told him I killed the Arkansas Chapter’s President. That’s why I have this position. In the Asphalt Gods MC that’s all you have to do, really. Kill your superior. But I couldn’t stay in Arkansas. My brothers and sisters wanted to kill me. They lost members in the raid, more than y’all did. And if they didn’t want my blood on their hands, they’d deliver me to Kingpin, no doubt.”
“Is there a war?” Levi must be out of the loop if he was asking.
“That guy you threatened for my secrets didn’t tell you?” I was being a smartass, but expounded, “Scar couldn’t let anyone believe he didn’t sanction the Halloween raid on Royal Road. It’s a feather in his cap. He’s young and untested. He needs all the feathers he can get. But there’s a truce. Him and Kingpin said they were square. Question is, will Arkansas honor it? Doubtful. They disagree with Scar because they lost more men than you all did, see. Their leader now, he’s worse than Killer had ever dreamed.”
“How so?”
“Killer needed an excuse to defy orders from our Mother Chapter. He needed me inside Royal Road and you to threaten me, a member. His Vice President, now President, Phobia has his excuse already.”
“I know of him. He’s unstable at best.”
“He lost more men in the battle, so thinks he’s owed blood, but he wants more than that. You know,” I said.
Levi knew more than I did about their feud, having been in the MC world a long time. I was a newbie compared. My only dog in this race was him. But I didn’t know how to make him understand that.
“Yeah, they’re still pissed we Royal Bastards ran them out of Tennessee after they killed my sister.”
“Exactly. Phobia will make his move.”
Levi quieted, deep in thought. I hoped to hell he wasn’t thinking of alerting his club. They couldn’t know where I was. Silence fell between us as we finished showering on our own. I got the shampoo and began working it into my hair. He scrubbed his bald head that was showing some stubble because he shaved.
Without a word, I offered him a razor. Once a swimmer, Levi shaved all the hair on his body. I preferred him that way. He left some stubble on his chin. I knew from experience he’d get that out at the sink.
With our bodies close, pressing together in the warm water, we finished. Finally, he leaned in and kissed me. His lips, soft and gentle held so much tenderness. I let out a contented sigh into his mouth. He heaved away quickly again, like he was unsure.
Stepping out, we dried without mentioning the elephant in the room. Levi was here to drag me to my death. I didn’t want to die. I wouldn’t. But his club that wanted me had his daughters. They threatened his life, and those he cared for.
The gravity of it weighed heavily on us both as we dressed. Having practically lived with the biker before, I knew he needed time to process our situation. He hadn’t said he had any faith that I wouldn’t betray him, but he wasn’t actively trying to kill me, and he kissed me. I could only assume I was safe for the moment.
A knock at my door startled us both.
Levi went for my gun that was still in his pants.
Chapter 7
Leviathan
Maren jumped at the knock. It alarmed me too. I had just towed on my jeans, so had her pistol that I had hidden there. Good thing it was loaded.
“I’ll get it,” Maren said, holding up her hands. She didn’t have to tell me to hide but to be alert to trouble. I stayed behind.
As she made her way to the door, I had time. I hauled on my shirt, wishing I had a fresh one. Listening to the voices coming from the other room, I understood Maren spoke to another woman. Feeling safe, I stepped into her bedroom and my boots. Sitting on the bed, I laced them up.
“He’s here,” came a familiar voice.
My face twisted in confusion.
“Who?” asked Maren.
“The man I met last night. He found you.”
“What are you talking about?” Maren asked her.
“He parked his Harley beside yours.”
Fuck. Since I was completely dressed and nothing looked out of the ordinary, I stepped out into the living room.
“I found your President,” I explained myself to Poison with a small smile.
