As he did, he said, “You deserve more than death for what you’ve done.”

I washed my hands. “What did I do? I saved your daughter’s life. And yours. I shot Killer.”

Levi’s eyebrows furled as he came up behind me. He washed his in the other sink. The look on his face said he didn’t believe me.

It was the God’s honest truth.

“I heard everything,” he said, like that explained it all.

I watched myself roll my eyes in the mirror as I grabbed my toothbrush. I saw Levi too as I loaded on minty paste and brushed quickly, erasing my morning breath. I couldn’t help thinking of his kiss moments ago. I hadn’t thought a thing about my breath then.

“You threatened my daughter.” His arms crossed. He was as thick as his dick.

I rinsed and spit. Turning, I crossed my own arms. I never thought I would be having this conversation naked in my bathroom while I was trying to right myself.

“I said what I needed to Killer, to get Haven away from him.”

Levi’s eyes narrowed.

“I guess it won’t get through your thick skull,” I said.

“My thick skull?” he asked, sounding scorned. “After what you did? People lost their lives.”

“Yeah, on both sides,” I said and instantly regretted it. I didn’t mourn the loss of any of the Gods in Arkansas. I had been just saying.

Levi’s hand balled into a fist as his nostrils flared.

I knew he would take it that way. But facts were facts.

I spoke my truth, feeling the frustration of holding it in too long. “Y’all’s fight had nothing to do with me. I didn’t call Arkansas like Killer claimed. It wasn’t me. I left my phone in the dressing room because I was so eager to meet you in the funhouse after my performance.”

Not saying a word, his face softened a hair at the mention of the time he professed his love for me. Although I had held onto that night to keep me going, how he was acting now made it seem so long ago. An ancient memory.

“Did your club find my phone?” I asked.

He looked away, answering me. They had. Of course they had. I was telling the fucking truth.

Aggravated, I shook my head.

“You were nowhere to be found. And here you are.” He motioned to all of me, my body. “Their fucking President.”

I whined, “You’re the one who told me to run.”

Levi spoke hard. “I did not.”

“You did. Killer had gotten the better of you. Hit you with a rock. He had his pistol ready to end you. I convinced him to let me kill you, but I shot him instead.”

“I heard what you said. That I was a monster. You told him that I raped you for weeks.”

“I fucking lied, okay? I said anything I could to make Killer let me shoot you instead.”

Levi didn’t look convinced.

“Listen. I ain’t big and strong like you. I have to use my wits to survive. I played along so I could save you. I killed a man.”

“Not the first time,” he said, confusing me.

“No. Not,” I admitted. “I tried to check on you, but you told me to run. It dawned on me how much trouble I was in, so I left you the gun and took off.”
