"Dear, you and I have a lot in common now, don't we?" he crooned.

I jerked back. "No!"

"Time will tell." His jaw clenched. "I'm not like my sons. I'm better at getting the job done. No time for hesitation regarding potential or known threats. Magda was a known threat to both of us and I took her out with no remorse."

"That still didn't give you the right to take away my chance for revenge!" I challenged.

"Oh, I have every right, my dear. I'm the one in control here, remember? And I'll do what needs to be done to securethe future I want," he said coldly, staring me down, his eyes narrowing with determination.

I folded my arms across my chest. "Right. You get what you desire," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

"My action to have Magda killed will also send a lesson to Finn and the rest of your coven not to mess with me," he said.

"Of course it, because you're a raging jerk of a demon."

“You wouldn’t be standing here arguing with me if your father raised you right,” he shot back.

My face twisted in rage as I grabbed the vase off the counter and hurled it at him with a scream. He reacted quickly and caught the vessel, just before it was about to strike his face.

I stared at him, my hands shaking, as I spoke. "Don't you ever mention my father again!" The magic in me broke free and black rose petals fluttered around me like a storm of tears.

His expression remained calm, but his lip curved into a silent grin of appreciation. "Now that's what I'm talking about."

"You don't know the first thing about my father or our family. So you don't get to talk about him," I reiterated firmly.

Apollyn's eyes narrowed. "I've been alive for centuries. I've seen and done things that you could never even imagine. Your father was a foolish man who didn't understand the power he held in his hands."

My rage reached its peak and the rose petals combust, turning to ash and fluttering to the ground. "My father was a powerful and respected witch—a Regent—who always acted with honor and integrity."

"Honor and integrity? He was weak. I speak the truth. He let others control him instead of taking control for himself," Apollyn sneered.

I shook my head. "My father was a better person than you could ever be."

Apollyn's expression turned stony. "Enough. I've had enough of your insolence. You will do as I say, when I say it. And you will learn to respect your elders."

I took a step back, alarm creeping into my heart. I knew I was playing with fire, but I couldn't back down now. "I will never respect you. You may have power, but that doesn't give you the right to dictate my life just because I made a choice to save your sons."

"Remember, dear, it was your aunt's magic that put them there in the first place," he stated.

I felt a wave of humiliation and chagrin run through me. I wanted to disappear.

Apollyn's eyes gleam with a dangerous light. "See? You'll learn, my dear. One way or another, you'll learn to listen and heed my warnings."

“We’ll see about that.”

“We’ll both see in the long run, Sadie," he said, joining his palms together.

I took a step back, feeling overwhelmed by the situation. I knew that Apollyn was a powerful being and that I was no match for him, but I couldn't bear the thought of losing everything before I ever put my plan into action.

As he extended his hand towards me, I abruptly recoiled, taken aback by the idea that he might think it was okay to lay a finger on me.

“I’m not going to hurt you,” he said.

“But I’m not so sure.”

His brow furrowed. “I can imagine the things my sons told you about me.”

“They didn’t tell me much of anything. The one thing you did that I detest, destroyed them.”
