“Did they even tell you who their mothers were?” he demanded, his voice rising like a dark storm.

My mouth went dry as I stammered an answer, unable to admit that I had no idea. The darkness in his gaze seemed to deepen as he waited for my response, leaving me feeling exposed and vulnerable.

“They weren’t like you," Apollyn spat venomously, his clenched teeth clamping down on the words. "They weren’t even human by the time I mounted, mated, and gave them my demon seed.”

“What does not being human have to do with you ending their lives all because they cheated on you?”

"Ah…I see. They didn't tell you the monstrosities their mothers were responsible for. The rot they left in their wake. Killing innocents to satisfy their appetites." His voice rumbled and rose with each passing sentence, spitting out his words in a near growl. "Makes sense. Makes a lot of sense that they would leave that out to paint me in a bad light. I couldn’t clean up after their mothers’ messes no more than I could clean up theirs."

“I…” I was speechless.

“Not to mention the way they treated my sons. Altair’s mother pushed him every chance she got to defy my orders. Told him that one day he’d be king quicker if he went against everything I said. Morpheus’ mother never paid attention to him. Said he looked too much like me; Said he looked like my evil twin. And Dominik…oh my…Dominik’s mother was a real wreck, that one. She told Dominik he would never amount to anything because his more docile brothers always got the limelight from me. My sons were pitted against me from the start, you see, Sadie. The only time my ex-wives had no complaints was when they were on their back taking my phallus. So don’t tell me I don’t know anything aboutfamily!”

I panted, shocked beyond reason.

“All this doesn’t matter now because I have the throne. I’m going to keep it. And I have one of the most powerful witches alive.”

I swallowed down the biggest lump but a dark shadow of dread hovered above me.

“You know it’s much easier to make new allies than it is to redeem oneself,” he continued when I didn’t utter nary a word.

“Okay, Apollyn. We have made a deal, but I can never fully trust you or be your true ally.”

“You already have put your trust in me, sweet Sadie. You trusted me to save my sons.”

I bit my lip and then muttered out in barely a whisper, “What more do you want from me?"

Apollyn's expression hardened again. "I want you to choose," he stated firmly. "Seek pleasure elsewhere, or I'll have to eliminate my sons the hard way. It's up to you."

I knew he wasn't making idle threats, but the idea of him harming my men was too much for me to bear. I felt a tightness in my chest. My world was collapsing around me, and I didn't know what to do.

He walked past me, his hand on the door knob. “Now I must get back to these whores. They are rather delicious.”

He morphed into a massive twelve-foot demon before yanking the door open and stooping under the threshold.

My anger was palpable, my magic licking at the edges of my consciousness and threatening to consume me. I felt like I was walking through a fog, unable to make sense of anything.

When I began hearing the screams of ecstasy coming from the other bedroom, I dashed away—as far away as I could.

Chapter 29

Sadie

Two weeks later…

The table was set with fine china and crystal stemware, and the light from the candles bounced off of them, creating a soft twinkling glow in the room. I could feel Apollyn's gaze on me as he attempted conversation, but I remained unfazed, my words stiff and my facial expression unyielding. Despite the warmth of the atmosphere, a chill hung between us.

Apollyn peered across the dinner table at me and remarked warily, "You've been keeping so quiet these past few weeks, and I'm not sure that's a good sign. Women often keep their lips sealed when planning something."

I tried to keep a straight face. "I've been planning what I've always been planning."

Apollyn perked up. "And what's that?"

"Never tell anyone your plans until you success, and even then, keep them to yourself," I said.

Apollyn snarled as he savagely stabbed his fork into the food on his plate. I tried to avoid his penetrating gaze, yet no matter where I looked, his eyes seemed to follow me. His stare felt asif it could pierce my soul, and I knew something was amiss. I had the feeling he knew some dark secret that he was intent on keeping from me, no matter how much I strained to read his thoughts.

"What new things have you learned?" he asked.
