Zac: Why did you think it was pointless?

Me: Because you wouldn’t have been able to do it, since you have Malcolm there with you.

Zac: Actually, he’s staying with my parents tonight.

Me: So you’re alone.

Zac: Yes. Just like you are.

Me: I’m tired of being alone, Buchanan.

Zac: So am I.

I paused my texting to take a deep breath and absorb the fact that a door had just opened for Zac to come over. Before texting anything to him about it though, I wanted to do something else.

Me: I have a song that I wanna send to you. I’ve listened to it several times since I’ve been home.

Zac: Norah Jones?

Me: No. Bishop Briggs. It’s her song called “River.” It’s been out for a good while but it’s still really popular and it’s addictive too. At least it is to me.

Zac: What’s addictive about it to you?

Me: The whole vibe of the music. Its energy is highly sexual, plus the lyrics remind me of us. If you listen to the song, I think you’ll have a very clear picture of what I want you to do to me whenever the time comes for you to take me to bed.

Zac: Text me the song, Sinclair.

I copied the link off Pandora, sent it to Zac, and then waited for his response. Less than three minutes later, he called me and I answered my phone by asking him if he liked what he’d just listened to.

“Yes. A lot. I’ve heard that song before but didn’t know the title or who sang it. Now, because of you, I have a great appreciation for it,” he said.

“It’s a great song.”

“And since I’ve listened to it again—this time knowing that it reminds you of us and also that it spells out what you want me to do to your body with mine—I wanna ask you a question.”

“So ask me.”

“May I come over to your house tonight?”

“You know what’s gonna happen if you do, right?”

“Yes. I’m ready for it to happen. Are you?”

“I am.”

I moved my mouth away from my phone and covered the receiver with my hand. I may have been coming across as calm, cool and collected about the subject matter that Zac and I were currently discussing, but I wasn’t calm, cool and collected on the inside at the moment. My heart was pounding because this affair between Zac and me was about to be in full force. We really were about to dothis. We were really about to fuck each other.Iwas about to fuck an extremely unhappily married man who hadn’t had sex in over four years. Same as me.

“Are you still there?” Zac asked.

“Yes.”

“What are you thinking about?”

“That you need to get over here as quickly as you can.”

“Okay. Before I do that though, I want you to understand something. This isn’t just about me wanting to have sex with you. I care about you, Stevie. Tremendously. And I’m also crazy about you.”

“I feel the same way about you. Even this soon.”
