I was surprised. “Did you really?”

“Yeah. Planned it all out. I asked her to marry me on the beach at sunset, had a photographer and everything.”

“Wow,” I said, imagining it. “It must’ve been so beautiful.”

“It was and thankfully, Chloe said yes!”

“That’s a good thing. When do you plan on marrying her?”

“August of next year.”

“Are you planning a honeymoon?”

“We are. We’re flying to England to go see all of the historical sites.”

“You’re gonna be so close to Scotland and Ireland. You and Chloe have to go there too!”

“Yeah, we’ve talked about doing exactly that and probably will.”

“Because of my ancestry, I really wanna visit Scotland.” I looked over at Zac and he was staring straight at me. “Have you been to our motherland?”

“I haven’t, but it’s at the top of my bucket list.”

“I hope you get to go there one day and sit in a pub, enjoy a Hendricks and tonic with extra lime while you’re there, and run into one of your Scottish relatives. Have a good long chat with them, exchange contact info, and maybe even get to meet some more of your kinsmen and kinswomen.”

“That would be amazing—and I hope you get to do that one day too.”

“Your ancestry test results are identical, right? Same percentage?” Brooke asked, looking back and forth between Zac and me.

“Yes,” he and I said together.

“Wouldn’t it be something if you two are distantly related?”

I looked back across the table at Zac and once again, he already had his eyes on me. “I’m curious about something,” I said to him.

“And what would that be?”

“Did you happen to trace your ancestry through records or did you just take the DNA test?

“I combed through every record that I could find online and there were hundreds of them. Well-documented records. I printed all of them too.”

“Do you happen to recall reading about any clan Buchanan men marrying a clan Sinclair woman?”

The corners of Zac’s mouth curled up. “Yes, I do. The first time that happened was during…”

“The fifteen hundreds. During the Renaissance when Mary Queen of Scots ruled,” I said, finishing his sentence.

“How do you know that?”

“After you and I met right here on that Friday after work and talked about our Scottish ancestry, I started wondering if there was a connection between us somewhere down the line. So after I got home that night, I went back through all the well-documented records of my lineage that I printed out and found the first Buchanan/Sinclair couple that I just mentioned.”

Zac gave me a full-blown smile this time. Dimple included. “I did the same thing late that night. After you and I talked about our ancestry, I also began wondering if we shared a connection.”

“History is fascinating, isn’t it?”

“To say the least.”

“Now I’m even more fascinated,” Brooke said, looking back and forth between Zac and me again. “And I challenge the two of you to pool your records sometime and compare them to see if they match. You can use the conference room at my office.”
