Zac glanced at me then looked back up at the waitress. “I’m not hungry either. Give us a little while and maybe we’ll all change our minds.”

As soon as the waitress walked off, the four of us began talking about summer vacations. Brooke had an Alaskan cruise booked while Jason had plans to go to Las Vegas with his fiancée, Chloe. Zac said he didn’t have any vacation plans and didn’t explain why. He didn’t have to. Brooke, Jason, and I were all aware that he was the only full-time parent to Malcolm and didn’t have the luxury to take off work to go somewhere to relax.

“What are your plans, Stevie?” Brooke asked me.

“I don’t have any.”

Her eyebrows knotted up. “Why?”

“Because it’s not any fun going on vacation alone.”

“Oh, I just thought you might’ve had a girlfriend or group of girlfriends that you travel with. I’ve taken trips with mine and it’s always a blast.”

“I’ll bet it is.”

“You should come with us next time.”

“I appreciate that. Let me know when you book your next trip.”

“I sure will. But seriously… You’ve gotta dosomethingfor yourself this summer. Go somewhere for a few days. I’ve taken trips alone several times just to have that time to myself and it’s always been so rejuvenating.”

“If I do anything at all, it’ll be a staycation at my house. I have my swimming pool and can lay out by it while imagining I’m on a beach in the Caribbean.”

“Or in Destin, Florida?” Zac interjected.

I looked over at him and smiled. “Yes.”

“I remember you telling Bash that was your favorite tropical place to go to in the U.S.”

“It is.”

“Because of the white-sand beaches and clear blue water.”

“That’s exactly why. Great memory, Buchanan.”

He grinned at the same time that he glanced down at my lips. “How many times have you been to Destin?”

“Several. Have you been there before?” I asked, knowing that Zac must have vacationed there at least once because of the t-shirt he’d worn over to my house yesterday.

“I haven’t, but my parents took a quick trip down there last summer.”

And that’s how Zac got that t-shirt, I thought to myself.

“Well, I highly recommend you go whenever you get the chance.”

“I’ll keep that in mind.”

“I highly recommend the two of you going also,” I said, looking at Brooke and Jason.

“I’ve been, and it is a gorgeous place, but this menopause that I currently have going on demands me to go to a cooler locale for vacation,” Brooke chuckled.

“I’m so sorry you’re dealing with that.”

“It’s just part of being a woman. Enjoy the age that you are as much as you can, Stevie, because before you know it, Madame M. will be showing up on your doorstep and royally pissing you off.”

All four of us laughed then, but I did pat Brooke on the shoulder.

“Speaking of Destin…” Jason said. “It’s where I proposed to Chloe.”
