“I’m gonna tell my dad about you and me this weekend,” I said.

Zac swallowed hard. “Stevie, you don’t have to if you’re really not ready. Don’t do it for me because that’s the wrong reason. Yes, I want your dad to know about us and I really would like to meet him, but only when it’s right for you.”

“I’m ready to let him in on our wonderful little secret. Whatever happens, happens.”

“Are you really worried about him reacting negatively?”

I shook my head no. “Not so much anymore. I’ve been thinking about everything you said to me about my dad and us while we were in Destin. I think things will be fine. I want my dad to know all about you. I wanna tell him how in love with you I am and how happy you make me. Depending on how it all goes, you may be meeting him this weekend.”

Zac smiled. “That’d be great. You just let me know when.”

Zac left my house not long after finishing his Neptunia gin and tonic with extra lime. He loved how it tasted and thanked me again for his surprise. I was so excited that he’d been able to stop by my house after work. I hadn’t been sure that he was going to have time, because he needed to pick up Malcolm from his parents and then go home, where Avery was still hanging out.

According to Zac, she was sticking to what she told him she was gonna do and that was to stay at their home and keep it peaceful. I knew as well as Zac did that it was only a matter of time until it wouldn’t be that way, and I’d be waiting with open arms for him to come home to me.

“THANKS FOR NOTminding me being in Malcolm’s room when you read him that bedtime story,” Avery said.

“He enjoyed you being there.”

“Do you mind sitting outside by the pool with me for a little while now?”

“Why do you wanna do that?”

“To relax and to just visit with you.”

I stared at Avery standing in the hallway with me, outside Malcolm’s bedroom. He was sound asleep, but I could tell that I wasn’t going to be sleeping any time soon. I wanted to find out the real motive behind Avery’s request.

“That’s fine. Let’s go,” I said.

She smiled at me. Before we left the house though, I grabbed a bottle of water out of the refrigerator.

“Do you want one? I asked Avery, holding up mine.

“No, I’m good. Thank you, though.”

“What about your usual?”

“I’m not drinking vodka tonight.”

“I saw your new bottle in the cabinet.”

“Yeah, I got it while I was in Lubbock.”

“You haven’t touched it since you’ve been back here. I saw where the line was and it hasn’t moved.”

Avery shrugged. “It just doesn’t sound good to me right now.”

After opening the back door, I motioned for Avery to walk ahead of me and followed her to the lounge chairs on the pool deck. I flipped on the pool lights to give the backyard a little more light since it was nighttime. When I sat down next to Avery, she smiled at me again.

“I’ve always loved our pool. The lights and waterfall are so pretty,” she said.

“I think they are too.”
