“I’m glad you did now, though. And about Malcolm… Isn’t he the most adorable kid ever?”

“He is. I call him Zac’s mini-me.”

“You are right about that. Zac showed me pictures of himself as a newborn and also when he was one, two, three, and four years old. He and Malcolm are identical.”

“I know. I saw those pictures plus a whole bunch of other ones of Malcolm and Zac at his mom and dad’s house.”

And there went jaw-drop #3. This time, Brooke grabbed my arm in surprise and I just laughed. Then she asked me how it had come to be that I’d gone over to the Buchanans’ home. After telling her about the chain of events that led up to it and also explaining how my meeting with Zac’s parents was arranged, she asked me what my impression was of the Buchanans.

“They’re such wonderful people,” I said.

“They are—and they raised a wonderful son whom they’ve wanted to see happy for so long. Now they have, because of you.”

There was a knock at my office door and I told whoever it was to come in. It was David.

“Hey, ladies. Sorry to interrupt.”

“No prob. What’s up?” Brooke asked him.

“I’ve got some questions about a case and I’d like to go over them with you.”

“Sure. Give Stevie and me just a few more minutes and I’ll come to your office.”

“Thanks.”

After David left, I asked Brooke about lightening up my security. As a matter of fact, I wanted all of it to stop. No longer did I feel like I needed to be escorted to and from my work or the courthouse: I hadn’t received any more anonymous letters or anything along those strange lines.

“I don’t know about that, Stevie. I’d feel better if we continued keeping an eye on you for a while longer,” Brooke said.

“I appreciate your concern so much, but everything is fine now. I feel good about it. I’m also tired of being babysat.”

“I know you are, but we want our Joan of Arc safe.”

“Brooke… I’m safe.”

She let out a heavy sigh. “Okay then. Have it your way. I’ll let everybody know.”

“Thank you. And I’ll let Zac know.”

I was walking down the crowded hallway on the sixth floor of the Dallas courthouse when I saw Zac and Bash coming in my direction. I smiled and waved at them and they returned the gesture.

“Good afternoon, guys,” I said as the three of us met and stepped aside, out of everyone else’s way, to talk.

“Hey, doll,” Bash then said. And like always, he hugged me, and while he was, I looked over his shoulder at Zac. His sky-blue eyes were sparkling and staring straight at me.

As soon as Bash and I let go of each other, Zac held out his hand to shake mine. Professional mode was back in full effect.

“How are you doing, Sinclair?” he asked, giving my hand a gentle squeeze.

“I’m great. How are you?”

“I’m great too. How’d you feel coming here alone?”

“Fine. Really, I’m not worried about anything crazy happening to me anymore.”

Zac glanced down at my lips. “If you change your mind about that then let me know. I’m happy to resume my position as your main bodyguard.”

“And I’m here for you in any way that I can help,” Bash added.
