“Stevie! That is beautiful and so delicate-looking,” she said.

“I think it is too. I’m really pleased with the job that the tattoo artist did.”

“What flower is that?”

“It’s Scottish thistle.”

“You better not tell me that Zac’s tattoo matches yours or I’m gonna give him so much shit.”

I chuckled. “No, ours don’t match. His is all black with a Celtic theme to it.”

“Where’d he get his?”

“On his right bicep. It’s quite large, too, and I just love it on him.”

“Is this your first tattoo?”

“Yes.”

“It’s Zac’s second one. I’ll never forget when he showed me Malcolm’s footprints and birthdate on his chest. Both of his tattoos and yours are very symbolic.”

“They certainly are.”

“And seeing your Scottish thistle made me think of your and Zac’s ancestry. Did you ever get around to comparing your records?”

“Not yet. While we were in Destin, we talked about doing that after we got back to Dallas. It’s gonna take hours and hours to get it all done.”

“Do it while you have time because you never know when it’s gonna run out,” Brooke said, smiling at me in a motherly way that I remembered my mother doing.

I searched her eyes and then hugged her. “Thank you for helping me get away with Zac.”

“Of course. My exception and I were able to do that a few times and it was wonderful being in the open with our relationship instead of hiding it.”

“I know exactly what you mean. Oh, by the way—Avery is back.”

“When did that happen?”

“Saturday.”

“How is Zac?”

“So far, so good. Malcolm too.”

“Good. I haven’t thought to ask you this, but have you seen a picture of that precious little boy yet? Surely you have.”

“Yes, I have. I’ve also met him, Brooke.”

Her jaw dropped again. “When?”

“I happened to run into Zac and him at the zoo before Zac and I became involved.”

“On that weekend when your dad was here.”

“Yes. Well, I went to the zoo after he left to go back to Austin.”

“I remember you telling me that you went and I understand now why you didn’t tell me the whole story at the time.”

I grinned. “Yeah, I thought it was best that I not say anything.”
