“Yes, we have time.”

“Then take me to bed, Buchanan.”

I picked her up underneath her arms as she wrapped her legs around my waist and her arms around my neck. We kissed all the way down the hallway and into her bedroom until we made it over to her bed. Then we took off our clothes as quickly as we could. At the moment that Stevie and I became one again, we both sighed, and as we began moving in our easy rhythm, I watched Stevie’s moody blue eyes. They were happy today and they were also full of desire for me…and I was home.

I LOOKED DOWNat Zac’s hand holding mine on the console of his Blazer then looked back up at his handsome, smiling face. We were on our way to his mom and dad’s house, but I still had about ten more minutes to enjoy what Zac and I were doing now.

This was the first time that we’d ever ridden together somewhere. We’d never risked it before because we didn’t want to take a chance on someone seeing us together. With every passing day, though, we were both caring less and less about if that happened. Riding alongside him like this felt right. It felt good. It was a small thing yet so big.

Zac brought my hand up to his mouth and kissed it, then said, “We’re about a mile away. You still feeling okay about this?”

“Yes, I feel fine about it. I wanna know your family, Zac.”

“And I hope to meet your dad one day.”

His eyes went back to watching the road, but I kept watching him while imagining my dad meeting him. I would love for that to happen. In a perfect world, it would. But the truth was, because of the status of my relationship with Zac, my dad would probably never want to meet him. I didn’t think he’d ever acceptthe man that I’d given my heart to because no matter how I framed our relationship, Zac and I were still having an affair.

As he was pulling into his parents’ driveway, I immediately noticed the big porch across the front of their brick home and also the swing. I loved seeing them. To me, they were a throwback to simpler and better times when the world wasn’t so busy and families gathered.

Hanging along the front porch were several Boston ferns and there were also manicured flowerbeds in front of it. Either Zac’s mom, dad, or both of them had green thumbs and enjoyed being outdoors with their hands in the earth—just like my mom and dad.

Zac came around to my side of his car and opened the door for me again, then he took my hand and helped me to my feet.

“Breathe, Stevie,” he chuckled. “It’s all good here at this house.”

“I just got nervous all of a sudden.”

“I think the reality of what we’re about to do just hit you.”

“It’s a big deal.”

“I know it is.”

“Zac, I hope they like me.”

“They’re gonna love you. Now let’s go.”

Just as Zac and I reached the front door, it opened and I looked up to see his mom and dad’s smiling faces. In both of them, I recognized physical traits of Zac’s. He was a perfect blend of his parents.

“Hello and welcome!” his mom said, reaching out and hugging me. Then she pulled back and looked over my face. “Stevie, it’s so nice to meet you.”

“It’s nice to meet you too, Mrs. Buchanan.”

“Oh please, just call me Beth.”

I smiled. “Okay—Beth.”

“This is my husband, Gregg,” she said, turning to him, and he held out his arms to hug me too.

“I’m really happy to meet you, Stevie,” he said.

“You too.”
