“Yeah, you need to let your food settle in your tummy before you go swimming because if you don’t, then your tummy might cramp up and that wouldn’t be good.”

Malcolm nodded his head in agreement.

“Here, I brought you something,” Bash said, reaching into his shorts pocket. Then he presented Malcolm with a package of sour gummy worms.

“Thank you, Uncle Bash!”

“You’re welcome, buddy. Save those until after you’ve gone swimming. Okay?”

“Okay.”

Bash put Malcolm down and we watched him take off running toward his room, smiling.

“Is it too early to have a drink?” Bash asked me.

“You know it’s not. What do you want?”

“Do you still have some Jose Cuervo?”

“Yep.”

“Triple Sec?”

“Yep.”

“Limes?”

“Always.”

“I’m about to go fix myself a margarita then.”

“Let’s go. I’ll have a Hendricks and tonic. Fuck it.”

Bash patted my arm as the two of us walked into the kitchen. He knew the layout of my entire house as well as I knew his and began making himself at home. While he was gathering the ingredients for a margarita, I got what I needed for my drink.

“Aw, look,” he said, pointing at Avery’s bottle of vodka in the cabinet. “I don’t think this needs to be here when the bitch gets back. You can tell her that I got rid of it. If she has a problem with that then she can take it up with me.”

Bash grabbed the bottle, emptied its contents into my kitchen sink, then tossed it into the trash can. When he looked back at me, we both started chuckling, and it felt good doing it, too. After making our drinks, the two of us sat down on the living room couch and Bash held up his glass toward me.

“Here’s to you, Zac—my best friend. You are a saint and I don’t know how you do what you do, living like this with Avery. But as always, my hat’s off to you and you have all my respect. Cheers.”

“Thank you for that,” I said, clinking my glass against his. Then we both took a big gulp.

“Does Stevie know what happened to you?” Bash asked.

I held up my finger to my mouth. “Call her Joan because of…” I nodded toward Malcolm’s bedroom.

“Will do.”

“And yes, she knows. I spent Friday night with her.”

“What was her reaction when she saw you?”

“She screamed in anger, then cried.”

“Whew. Yeah,” Bash said, taking another gulp of his margarita. “I bet she did.”

“Then she picked the shards of glass out of my skin and doctored my face.”
