“Pleasure you.”

Stevie’s eyes were shining as they danced across my face. “Are you sure you’re up to it?” she asked.

“Yes, I’m sure. I’m already getting hard just talking about it.”

“Then come on. Pleasure me, lover.”

I stayed at Stevie’s house until my mom texted me that she, my dad and Malcolm were back from the zoo. I needed to go pick upmy boy, take him home and let him get settled back into being there again without his mother. Even though he hadn’t had a whole lot to do with Avery over the past two weeks, he knew she was in the house and he was noticeably on guard. He’d learned to be that way around her just like I had.

Before I drove over to my parents’ house, I called my mom and told her what happened with Avery last night, then asked her to pass it on to my dad. I also told her about the cuts on my face and to not be alarmed when she saw me. She asked me what I was going to tell Malcolm because she knew, just like I did, that he was going to ask me what happened. I’d decided to tell him that I was on a ladder in our backyard, cleaning out the house gutters, and lost my footing and fell off the ladder. I hated lying to him but there was no way that I was going to tell him what his mother had done. He wouldn’t understand it.

Before I left Stevie’s house, she doctored my face again then groomed my beard for me. She trimmed it, cleaned up the edges, and even shaved the back of my neck like my barber did. While she was doing all that, I watched her movements with her hands and her eyes. She was so caring and gentle and I just wanted to pick her up into my arms and take her home with me.

Stevie and I agreed to try to get together sometime during the upcoming week before she went to Austin to go with her dad to get his heart tests done. That was scheduled for Thursday. I already knew my parents wouldn’t mind watching Malcolm for me after I got off work so I could take a run at the trail, aka see Stevie. They wouldn’t care if it was one day or Monday through Wednesday and I was grateful. I was also grateful that I was going to get to see Stevie again and soon. I had to see her, I had to touch her and hear her voice in person. I didn’t care if we had sex again in the woods or if it happened at her house. I just needed to be near my soulmate and breathe her in. She was my lifeline and the only thing keeping me afloat.

While driving over to my mom and dad’s house, I made the decision to tell my dad about Stevie. It was time. I knew he was going to be angry about what Avery did to me but I also felt like he’d be happy for me knowing that I’d met someone like Stevie.

After arriving at my parents’ house, I quietly told my mom what my plan was and she took Malcolm outside to play so I could have some one-on-one time with my dad. He and I talked about everything for about half an hour. He said he understood my position and then asked me if I was in love with Stevie. Of course, I told him that I was, and also showed him the same pictures of her that I’d shown to my mom. He made the same comments that she made about Stevie being so beautiful and also how he’d never seen me look so happy. Then my dad asked me about meeting Stevie. My mom hadn’t done that yet even though I knew she’d been wanting to.

I told my dad that I would talk to Stevie about meeting him and my mom. I also told him that I felt like she’d be all for it. He smiled and then hugged me—and it was just what I needed. Acceptance. Acceptance for who I was, how I was, whom I loved, and why I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I could hardly wait for my mom and dad to meet Stevie Sinclair—the love of my life.

“THAT FUCKING BITCH,”Bash said under his breath as he was walking into my house.

I’d texted him earlier this morning—Sunday—to ask him if he had time to come by to talk to me in person. I also let him know that Avery was back in Lubbock. Bash rang my doorbell thirty minutes later, and he’d just seen the cuts on my face.

“Yeah, Avery threw a glass at me again.”

“When?”

“After I got home on Friday night.”

Bash shook his head and sighed. “This can’t keep happening, Zac.”

“I don’t think it will happen again. I put my hands on Avery this time.”

“You didn’t hit her, did you?”

“No, but I did drag her into the living room and threw her down on the couch. Then I threatened her with calling the police and pressing charges against her. And I would have if she’d started coming at me again, hitting me and all that.”

“You don’t know how much I’d love to see her goddamn mugshot.”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Uncle Bash!” Malcolm said, running up to him. We were standing in the entryway while Malcolm had been in his room playing.

“Hey, little buddy! How are you?” Bash asked, picking him up and hugging him.

“Will you go swimming with Daddy and me?”

“Oh, I wish I could but I didn’t bring my swimsuit. I didn’t know you were going swimming.”

“Daddy said we had to wait one hour because we just ate breakfast..”
