“Yeah, maybe don’t do that with her.” He squinted at one especially misshapen peanut. “Unless you wanna end up like the last few dudes who were stupid enough to try something with the Demon Lord’s baby girl.”

“What happened to them?”

Rhun shook his head, his mouth pressed into a thin line. “May the poor bastards rest in peace.”

Bahram audibly swallowed.

“Anywho,” Rhun said cheerfully and slapped the bar top. “I’m gonna call it a night. Got a gorgeously voluptuous witch who’s waiting for me.”

The bluotezzer vanished into the crowd, leaving Tallak alone with a glum incubus.

Without a word, Tallak got out a glass and poured a good amount of whiskey into it, then pushed it over to Bahram. Shoulders drooping, the other demon picked it up, equally silent, and drank the liquor in one go. His gaze veered back to Lucía, still dancing with her friends while casting meaningful glances at Bahram. With a pained expression, he turned back to Tallak and tapped the glass.

“Keep it coming.”

Tallak poured him another. “I’d say Ava will be happy to have someone drown their sorrows in her liquor, but you’re probably not paying for this, are you?”

“Perks of being the bar owner’s little brother.” Bahram raised his glass in a salute and then knocked it back.

“Hey, handsome,” Lucía said from where she’d sidled up on his right.

With a choked sound, Bahram spit his drink out over the bar, showering Tallak in the process.

Glaring at the damn incubus, Tallak wiped his face with the dish towel. “Watch where you’re spraying your shit,” he snarled.

“Sorry,” Lucía said with a coy grin at Bahram. “Didn’t mean to startle you.”

“You didn’t,” Bahram rasped. “Just got something…stuck in my throat, is all.”

Tallak busied himself with cleaning some already clean glasses and hid his smirk.

“So,” Lucía drawled, moving an inch closer to Bahram, who looked decidedly uncomfortable. “I saw you checking me out.”

Bahram grabbed the whiskey bottle and poured himself a generous amount before downing the entire glass.

“Not that I minded.” Lucía leaned on the bar with her right elbow, her body turned toward Bahram. “Feeling’s mutual.”

Tallak could swear he saw sweat beading on Bahram’s forehead.

“Maybe we could…” She laid her left hand on his arm, running it up to his shoulder. “Go somewhere a bit more private and see where things go?”

Bahram cast a desperate look at Tallak as if imploring him to help.

Tallak raised both brows and gave the smallest shake of his head. Sorry, bud. Not gonna step onto this minefield. No way in hell would he get on the shit list of Arawn’s little girl by shooting her down for Bahram.

The incubus grimaced and shifted on the stool. Clearing his throat, he turned to Lucía. “Sweetheart, you’re as enchanting as the spring dawn, and I’d love to learn all the ways you can blush, but I don’t think it’s a good idea…considering your, uh, family.”

Lucía stiffened. “You know who I am.”

Bahram nodded.

“Ughhhhh.” She threw up her hands and swung her gaze toward the ceiling as if pleading to the gods. Or cursing them. “Dammit, Arawn,” she muttered. “Might as well stamp me with Do Not Touch, Violators Will Be Punished.”

Bahram flinched.

Lucía brought her attention to the incubus again, a calculating look on her face. “You know,” she said, her voice sensually low, “Arawn isn’t even in his territory right now. He’s thousands of miles away. If there ever was a good opportunity to do something he won’t hear about, it’s now.”

Bahram stared at her, his eyes transfixed, leaning subtly closer as she walked her fingers up his chest. Shaking his head as if coming to, he straightened again with a tortured expression.
