Cass’s backyard is scattered with people, but it’s nowhere near as busy as it was inside the house. Lucas leads me down the steps from the wide veranda to the manicured lawn and takes a seat on one of the wooden benches at the edge of Cass’s garden.

“Sit,” he commands.

Hesitantly, I do as he asks.

He breathes out a heavy sigh. “I’ve really missed you, Lainey.”

“I know.”

“I’m so sorry. For everything.”

“I know. You’ve apologised enough. I’m over it, Lucas.”I’m over you.

“When I came to see you last... I shouldn’t have laid all that stuff on you the way I did, about your dad.”

I put my hand out and put it on his arm. “I’m glad you did. I needed to hear it.”

His eyes are locked on mine. “You can tell me to mind my own business,” he starts, “but I have to ask. What’s going on with you and Ben?”

It’s not lost on me that four or five months ago, it was Ben inviting me to spill all the gory details of my pain over Amber and Lucas. And now it’s Lucas inviting me to spill my pain over my non-relationship with Ben. I guess it’s true what they say: everything does come full circle.
