“I think Seb fancies himself Cupid.”

“Hmm,” Ben says.

I turn to him. “Did Seb say something to you?”

“He paid me a visit earlier.”

“He drew the short straw,” Duncan says.

Ben wraps an arm around me and pulls me into his side while looking at Duncan. “You still pissed at me?”

“I don’t know. Do you still have your head up your arse?”

“Nope. I’ve asked Lainey whether she can rewrite the ending to her book.”

“Well, hell-a-fucking-loo-yar. You guys belong together, man.”

Cass purses her lips together and glares at Ben. “If you hurt her again, I’ll cut your balls off and feed them to the birds.”

“You know, you hurt her, too.”

“Okay,” I say, jumping in quickly. Things may be good between Ben and me, but Cass and Ben might need more time.

“I’m going to go get a drink,” Ben says, before dropping a kiss on top of my head.

Duncan stands up, too. “I’ll come with you. Cass and I need refills.”

“Did he apologise?” Cass asks the moment the boys are gone.

“Yes.”

“Are you happy?”

“Yes.”

Cass smiles. “Then I’m happy for you.”

“Thank you.”

I’m happy for me, too. I didn’t hold on to Ben when he wasn’t mine. I didn’t delude myself or convince myself that if I just tried a little harder, just stuck at it a little longer, I could make it work. No, I let him go with the knowledge that I could cope on my own and that my life would go on. I did the right thing by myself; I had confidence in myself, and I made myself proud.

Ben coming back to me as my friend and lover is just the biggest damn cherry on top of the ice-cream sundae.
