CHAPTER7

Monroe

It was hot today. All I wanted to do was lay out by the pool. Our community houses four properties only. For the heirs of BurBay Falls. It is one long street and at the end of it, our parents put in a huge swimming area. There’s a four-foot pool for when we were younger in the front. A rock cave made of deep gray stone. In the cave sits rock tables and stone benches waist-deep in water for when our parents have drinks. On the other side of that, it opens up to a heated pool ten-foot deep. It has a stone patio all the way around with lounge chairs, tables, a TV, and sound system. It has low lighting and is peaceful. Exactly what I needed.

I avoid the pathway that leads to the top of the cave where the hot tub rests and overflows like a waterfall into the kids’ pool. I have on one of the dresses I purchased while I was in Africa during the summer. It was a handmade, floor-length dress that ties at the neck in an elegant orange color with a brown pattern. I have my Gucci glasses on as I look over all the land that is spread out. They say there used to be a lot more houses here, but they tore them down. I wonder what they’ll do with the rest of the land.

Throwing my dress off, I walk through the kids’ pool area, past the waterfall, and into the cave. I run my hand over the familiar, gilded rock tables. I walk up the three steps to the cave, stopping when I hear moans. A girl’s moan. Thinking it’s Easton, I’m about to tell him to fuck off, when the sight before me has my words catching in my throat.

At the edge of the pool, Holly rests on her elbows, her dirty blonde wet hair touching the ground, head thrown back as Nixon grips her thighs, thrusting her closer to his mouth. I watch as his tongue works her, eyes heavy as he stares at her.

Pain. That’s all I could feel. And like a bad train wreck, I wanted to look away, but I’m too curious about the damage happening in front of me. My heart snaps, sinking into the pit of my stomach. My eyes burn, throat working a knot down my throat.

One of his hands fists his dick as he continues to assault her with his tongue. Images flash; me with my head thrown back, Nix licking water drops off my thighs, hands gripping into my skin as he pulls me closer, his hot breath skating over my heat, teasing me… Holly screams, my eyes flash open, heat seeping through my swimsuit as I clench my legs together. I feel achy, so wet, and all I wanted was him.

Her face contorts with ecstasy as she rides wave after wave of pleasure. He jumps up on top of her, pushing her down gently, straddling her chest. She giggles as he strokes his cock, a sinister smile taking over his face as he rubs himself on her lips. She opens greedily, sucking him in. He thrusts into her, ass flexing, throwing his head back. He groans, emptying himself inside her mouth. Then she wipes her lips.

Look away, Monroe. Run.But I couldn’t. Even though my heart begs and pleads it couldn’t take any more of this. I stand there, slightly hiding behind a rock. “Mon ange,” he purrs, kissing her lips.

“So, I get my very own French nickname now?” she asks breathlessly.

He smirks. “Perks of being my girlfriend.” His… what?

His words jolt my brain into action, and I walk back, hitting a hard chest. Looking up, I see Everett. He smiles sadly at me, then pushes his finger to his lips, shushing me. He grips my hand as we take the stairs up to the hot tub. We both sink in. Me throwing my head back. “Roe, for what it’s worth, he’s stupid,” Everett whispers.

My laugh is humorless, void of any and all emotion as it slips past my lips. “No, Ever, I’m the stupid one.” Sighing, I sink in deeper. “As long as he’s happy, I’m…”

“Don’t lie, Roe,” Everett barks at me in a harsh tone.

“It’s what a good best friend would do,” I argue.

He scoffs. “Good best friends don’t sleep with their best friend’s friend.” He raises an eyebrow, challenging me.

“It’s for the best. Honestly. It’s time I get out there and see what all this relationship business is about, anyways.”

Ezra comes up the stairs, looming over us. “Well, this looks oddly depressing,” she muses. “I like it, and I’d like to join. I like how there are looming clouds over each of your spoiled little heads.” She sinks into the hot tub wearing an all-black bikini. It covers nothing.

“Tell me, Little Monster, did something eat your swimsuit? Because that shit is almost nonexistent,” Everett growls at his youngest cousin.

“Chill out, Dahmer. It’s just us here.” Everett frowns as I snort.

“Did you just call me Dahmer, as in the killer, Jeffrey Dahmer?” he asks, his brow furrowed.

She smirks, tossing her sunglasses on. “You can pretend that mind of yours is all sunshine and rainbows, but I know your ass is psycho, cousin.” And then she plugs her AirPods in, dismissing both of us. I’m still laughing when Nixon and Holly come up the stairs, laughing and holding hands. Nixon freezes when our eyes connect but I’m already getting out.

“Oh, God.” Ezra groans. “We are having a glooming party, and you two,” she points at Nixon and Holly, “are shitting all over it.” She glares at them as Everett snarls.

I walk past them. “Monroe.” Nixon grabs my hand. Monroe, not ma fille. Somehow, that hurts more than watching him go down on Holly.

Pulling my hand away gently, I smile up at him. “Sorry, Nixon, I have to go. My dad needs me.” I turn, my fake smile immediately dropping as I hurry down the stairs.

“Five, six, seven, eight,” Emerson barks at me in her home gym. I go through the hip-hop dance again. My tennis shoes squeak on the floor as I pop and break to my knees in a slide across the floor, rolling my body. It’s the first time since I’ve been home that I have felt free. Rising to my feet, I do a turn before strutting sassily, whipping my hand in an X with each step, and end with my hand on my left hip.

“That was great, Monroe!” Emerson claps. She’s my dance teacher, but I have the privilege of being home-taught and not having to go to her studio in town. “Now grab your jazz shoes and top hat!”

Kicking off my tennis shoes, I grab my jazz shoes and top hat, putting them on. “Rumor Has It” by Adele begins thumping through the studio. I wait for the eight-count before flipping around and beginning the moves. When the tempo picks up, I break into a pirouette. I’m completely lost doing the routine that when I break and hear more than one clap, it startles me. “Yes! Yes! Yes! You are my most promising student!” Emerson comes up, hugging me. “Julliard won’t know what hit them!” I smile at her, forgetting everything around me. “Okay, get in position to“Ride.”

I sigh, “Ride”is my sexiest dance, and my dad will lose his shit when he sees it. I remove my top hat and switch my shoes—again—before I throw my hands in a circle above my head and my hip juts out to the right, my left foot pointed. “Ride” by Ciara blasts through the speakers. I start out in a sequence of hip-hop moves, popping my arms and legs to the sultry beat. I break out, sliding on my knees, pulling up my shirt while my hands roam my body. With my hands in my hair, I spin my head, rolling over, legs spread, ending in a split. I then finish the set by getting up and shaking my ass. I go through more hip-hop moves, throwing in turns and leaps, ending with my head down.

When the song ends, I’m out of breath, panting. It’s silent. Looking up, I catch Everett, Easton, and Nixon with their mouths hung open. My cheeks flame with embarrassment at them seeing me dance like that. I quickly look away as Emerson jumps up and down. “Holy fuck, Monroe! You killed that. Oh my God. Okay, ballet time!”

I groan. I hate ballet but I could do it. “Okay, okay. We’ll break for the day, but tomorrow, ballet first.” I smile at her as her green eyes, so much like Nixon’s, twinkle at me.

Thanking her, I grab my bag, throwing my many fucking shoes in it. “Monroe,” Nixon chokes out. I look him up and down, smirking. I still affect you.

“Sorry, Nixy. I have to go get ready for my date.” I wave at him as I leave and see Easton push a very stunned Nixon.

I hear Emerson barking at the boys about not coming in while I practice. I smile all the way home.It seems two could play at this game, after all.
