Sitting back down, I turned sideways and slung my legs over the arm, trying to get comfortable.

“Sir, can you not do that?” the desk agent asked.

I eyed him and then deliberately dropped my feet back down. I started watching videos.

“Can I ask you to use headphones?” the guy said. “That’s very distracting for other guests.”

Again, what guests? I turned the sound on my phone down.

Ten minutes went by. I started to doze off, bored out of my mind.

“Sir, we really can’t have you sleeping in the lobby. I’m going to ask you to return to your room.”

I sat up straighter, eyeing the little neurotic desk dude with complete irritation. “I can’t return to my room. I’m locked out. That’s why I asked for another room.”

“I can rekey your room card if it’s not working,” he said, like I was a total idiot.

“That’s not the issue. The latch is closed.”

“But it can’t be if there’s no one in the room.”

“There is someone in the room.”

“Then just have them let you in.” Now he really looked bewildered.

I thought my head was going to explode. “They’re not answering the door. Listen, why do you care? I’m allowed to sit in this lobby.”

“Please don’t raise your voice with me. I’m going to have to call the police if you don’t calm down.”

“The police?” I asked in astonishment. “I haven’t done anything!”

“What’s going on?”

I turned and saw Faith a few feet away in sweats, a baggy shirt, and socks, holding an ice bucket.

“Miss, don’t worry. I have everything under control. I’m just calling the police to escort this gentleman out of the hotel.”

“I couldn’t get in the room,” I told her. “Faith, tell this guy I’m not a threat.”

“He’s with me,” she said, smiling at the desk man. “He’s just tired from the drive and needs to go to bed. Thanks for your diligence.”

She took my hand like I was a small child and led me toward the elevator. I shot a triumphant look at the desk guy. He frowned at me.

In the elevator, after she let go of my hand, I explained to Faith the situation. “So can I wait in your room until Dylan’s new friend leaves?”

“It’s almost ten. What if they keep going… or fall asleep?” She hugged her ice bucket to her stomach.

“That is a very real concern. I have no idea. That guy claims they don’t have any free rooms at all and the nearest hotel is forty minutes away. Ian isn’t answering my calls.”

Faith bit her lip. “You should just stay in my room. It’s getting late and we both really should get some sleep. I have a couch.”

I eyed her. “Are you sure?” Personally, I was completely relieved. I couldn’t return to the lobby and my other option was to nap in my car or drive east and hope a hotel had a room and both sounded like hell. I could call Ian and sleep on his couch, but why would I do that when I could sleep on Faith’s? “I don’t have a good track record of keeping my hands to myself in your room.”

“Can I trust you?”

Great. That gave me no choice but to completely behave myself. “Yes. You can trust me. I will behave. Thank you for saving me from being arrested.”

The elevator dinged and we walked down the hallway.
