Taking a deep breath to calm my boiling nerves, I turn to her. “Speaking from experience, huh?” My voice comes out cool and even.

Vanessa’s jaw drops, and she narrows her eyes. “Just you wait and see, you bitch.” Then she huffs off, her dark hair bouncing off her shoulders.

She may look perfect, but on the inside, she’s rotten.

I turn back just in time to see Xander score.

“You’ve got this, Alex,” Blaze shouts as he comes to stand next to me. Then he murmurs, “What the fuck did she want?”

“Nothing,” I mumble. I have no desire to talk about Alexander right now. I don’t want Vanessa’s words to be confirmed.

Tristan almost scores, but ends up slamming the ball straight into the net.

“Thank god,” I say, and Blaze chuckles.

“Don’t want to go on a date with the devil’s spawn?”

“Blaze, let’s be real. I came here with the devil’s spawn. Tristan is something far worse.”

He laughs, his eyes following as Tristan and Xander hit the ball back and forth.

It’s nerve-wracking for sure, but after realizing that I very well might just be one of Alexander’s whores, I kind of want both of them to lose.

Too bad that’s not how the game works.

While Tristan and Xander battle for the next point, my mind battles with itself.

Vanessa’s words are worth less than shit.

But she’s been around Xander more over the past few years.

And Brooke said he doesn’t do long-term relationships anymore.

But Dominic says he’s always treated you differently.

But that was five years ago. We’ve all grown up.

Sure, I could just ask Alexander. But how do I do that without betraying the fact that I want him to want me? Forever. He’s always had a dark side, and if it’s come back out to play, I don’t want to give him one more thing that he can use to manipulate me.

And I’m also not sure I’ll trust the words that leave his mouth. Even if it’s what I want to hear.

Finally, Alexander scores, and relief floods me. Tristan looks ready to explode, but he holds it together. There are lots of people watching.

Alexander tosses his racket onto a bench, exiting the fence and jogging over to me. With everyone’s eyes on us, he takes me into his arms and kisses me. His sweaty skin sticks to mine as he pulls away.

“I was worried there at first,” Blaze says, elbowing him. “Tristan got you good at the beginning.”

“You really think I’d let Tristan have the satisfaction of beating me? Or that I’d let him think he had a chance to get a date in with Sophia?”

“I wouldn’t’ve gone,” I growl.

“Damn right. Over my dead fucking body.”

When I dated Tristan in high school, he’d been a complete asshole. Not only did Xander help me get away from him, but he made sure Tristan stayed away from me after we broke up.

Even though I’m irritated at this whole situation, Xander’s protectiveness fills me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. I’d love to say that it’s just nostalgia, but it’s not. I like that he hates the thought of me being with Tristan. It means there’s hope that he still wants me the way he wanted me years ago.

And not just as another pretty girl.
