“Come in.”

There’s something about that voice that sends a shiver through me and when I open the door, walking into the office and taking in the man before me, sitting at his desk with his eyes trained on the computer in front of him, I wonder if the universe is playing a cruel trick on me. Because sitting there, looking all kinds of sexy and delicious, is Luke.

Luke Masters.

As in the CEO of Masters Publishing and my new boss.

Fuck me.

His eyes divert to me for a split second when they flare with recognition, I know I’m in trouble. I wasn’t supposed to see him again. It was supposed to be one night, and we’d go our separate ways. Now I’m standing in his office, surrounded by his cologne, which is clouding my judgment because all I want to do right now is haul him over that desk and find out if his lips taste as good as I remember.

“Ms. Winters.” His voice is low, reserved as he places his hands on top of his desk and my eyes can’t help staring at them, wondering if my memories are doing them justice. “Or should I say, Charly?” His questioning tone has my eyes flying up to meet his and when I do, I regret it immediately because the lust mixed with anger staring back at me causes my knees to weaken.

My mouth opens to explain, but nothing comes out because what do you say in this situation? We spent an amazing night together, I left without telling him and now he's my boss. When I don’t say anything, he gets up from behind his desk and I take in the man before me. He’s in a suit, dark blue from what I can tell, crisp white shirt and orange tie. He looks edible. And from the way his eyes track down my body and his eyes flare at the dip in my cleavage, I know he likes what he sees.

He leans back against the edge of his desk, crosses his feet at his ankles as his arms cross over his chest, reminding me just how amazing his arms look. “So, Ms. Winters, you think you can handle being my assistant?” His voice is casual, a hint of arrogance that gets my blood boiling.

“Yes, sir.”

His eyes flare, his arms leaving his chest as his fingers grasp the edge of the desk, squeezing.

“Well, we both know you’re good at taking notes… or should I say leaving them.”

My eyes widen. I expected us to talk about the note, but not this soon.

“Look, I know I shouldn’t have left—”

He holds up his hand for me to stop talking and I do. He takes off his glasses, pinches the bridge of his nose before his gaze meets mine once more.

“Go to HR, fill out all the paperwork and then come back here and we’ll talk.” He doesn’t say anything else as his glasses go back on his face, I turn around to take a step toward the door when I feel the heat of his body behind mine. “If you decide to run again without so much as a word to me, there will be consequences.”

The shiver that goes through my body at the tone of his voice brings me back to the other night and the way that voice commanded me for hours on end.

Just as I turn to say something back, he turns his back to me as he rounds his desk and sits back down. “That will be all, Ms. Winters.”

I am in so much trouble.

Chapter 5

Filling out paperwork didn’t take up nearly as much time as I wanted. I was hoping this would take all day and I would be able to leave without having to see Luke again. That way I could go home, down a bottle or two of wine and make sure that taking this job was a good idea. Did I want this job? One hundred percent. I’ve dreamed of working at an established publishing house since high school, but do I want this dream job to be haunted by the fact that I know what my boss’s cock feels like while he fucks me? Not really.

When I get back to my desk, I notice that his door is closed, so I decide to give myself some time to process what the hell I’m going to do. I plunk down on my chair, swiveling back and forth as I turn on my computer, noticing that I need a login and knowing that the only person who can give that to me is sitting in the office behind me.

All of a sudden, my phone rings, and I hesitate to pick it up because I’m not sure if I’m allowed to do that yet. But when it keeps ringing and eyes start to glare over in my direction, I pick it up.

“Mr. Masters’ office, how can I help you?”

There’s silence on the other end before that gravelly, sexy voice fills my ear.

“Next time, you pick up the phone after the first ring, understand?”

“Yes, sir,” I choke out as I sit up straight, wondering if he can even see me but not taking the chance.

“Come into my office, Ms. Winters.” And with that, he hangs up and I stand, wiping my hands on the front of my skirt and taking a deep breath.

My eyes search the room and there are a few people that are watching, probably curious if I’ll last as long as the last person. I wish I had the confidence to tell them all to fuck off, but at this point, I don’t even know if I’ll last until the end of the day.

When the door shuts behind me, I’m left in silence as I take in the man before me. He looks so different from the man I met the other day. The suit does wonders, but if I’m honest, I love him in jeans and a T-shirt more. It shows a side of him I’m not sure many people see.
