“Do you want this job, Ms. Winters?”

The question catches me off guard, the answer seems obvious since I’m standing here and I haven’t left yet. But I nod my head.

“Good,” he says, laying the palms of his hands on his desk as he stands, those eyes never leaving mine. “Now the more important question is, did you enjoy yourself the other night?”

I recoil at the question because that was not what I was expecting to come out of his mouth.

“I’m sorry, what?” I say before thinking and when his eyes narrow, I shut my mouth.

“I don’t think the question is hard, do you?” His voice is stern, and I don’t know what to do with the man standing in front of me. I love the commanding tone of his voice. I love the charged energy that is definitely linked between us, but I’m stuck between wanting him and wanting this job.

“No, sir,” I say as his eyes never leave mine. “But I’ve been told that you don’t date your staff, especially your assistants.”

His lips curve into the sly smile that I’ve been dreaming about since I left his apartment.

“That is true.” He offers no more insight as he walks around his desk, stopping so we’re only feet apart. “But I didn’t ask if you wanted to date me, Charly. I asked if you enjoyed the other night.” I nod my head slightly as the heat returns to his gaze.

“Yes, sir. I did.”

His nod is the only sign I get that he heard me.

“What do you want from me?” I ask before I think better of it.

“Now that’s a complicated question.”

I tilt my head to the side because it’s really not. But I stand there in silence, waiting for his response.

“I want an assistant that can actually do this job and do it well.” His thumb plays with the edge of his lips, making my eyes stay directly on them when he says the next part. “But I also want to bend you over this desk and fuck you so hard that everyone in this office will know who you belong to.”

I suck in a breath because the image that he just conjured up in my brain is so filthy, so insanely sexy, that it would have Mrs. Miller at the front desk clutching her pearls.

What the fuck do I do now?

Chapter 6

“Excuse me?” I whisper, the words he just said washing over every limb of my body, making me wonder what it would be like to just give in to the fantasy he conjured and say fuck it to my career and reputation.

“You heard me,” he states, and he takes a step toward me, causing the air in the room to thicken with every step he takes. “I don’t date employees, that’s correct. But I also don’t like waking up alone after one of the best nights of my life, so where does that leave us?” he asks as if I know the answer.

I don’t.

When I say nothing, he takes another step closer, his face close enough that his breath washes over my skin and his cologne takes over every one of my senses. “Why did you leave, Charly?” The question isn’t demanded, and when I take the chance of meeting his eyes, I see a vulnerability there that I haven’t seen since we left Target.

“I’m not good at… all of this,” I whisper as that tilt in his lips sends a shiver through my body.

“Explain,” he says, his thumb tracing the side of my face as those blue eyes bore into mine.

“Well, dating isn’t really my strong point. I’m awkward and usually say the wrong thing at the wrong moment and I wanted to avoid that?” I question, hoping he takes my honesty for what it is. “I had an amazing time, like the best I’ve ever had, amazing. But I knew if I stayed, I would have ruined it and I wanted to keep that night as perfect as it was.”

We’re silent for a second before his hand drops from my face and he turns from me, walking back toward his desk.

“Am I fired?” I ask, hoping to God I don’t have to go back out there and collect my things in front of all those people. But when Luke starts laughing, a wave of relief hits me.

“No, you’re not fired. I'm trying to figure out how I can keep you and fuck you at the same time.”

My mouth opens in shock. “Seriously?”

He nods.
