“What do you mean you just left?” Willow asks as we sit on the couch, bingeing on chips and salsa since were too broke for actual Mexican takeout.

“Just that. I left before he woke up and I’ll probably never see him again,” I say with a nervous laugh.

“But he was hot?” Willow’s eyes are big, begging for more info on my mystery man.

“Will, he was a mixture of Jared Leto and Harry Styles. The glasses, the blue eyes, and the hair. It was all amazing and hard to resist.”

“Well, it sounds like you didn’t really resist, did you?”

I throw a pillow at her as a laugh bursts out of my chest. She’s not wrong.

“Can’t you tell me something other than he was a good kisser?”

I smile, shaking my head because my best friend is insatiable. I know Luke has a mouth that would rival the best of them, but for some reason, I want to keep him to myself for a little bit longer.

“Let’s just say he was good at every aspect of last night.”

“Fine, don’t tell me any details and keep them all to yourself like a selfish bitch.” She crosses her arms against her chest and I laugh. “I wonder what he thought when he woke up?”

I shrug my shoulders because I’ve wondered that too. But it’s not like I’m ever going to see him again, so I don’t have to worry about that.

“Doesn’t matter. I need to open some boxes and find my best professional outfit for tomorrow,” I say, getting up off the couch and rummaging through boxes before I find the one I’m looking for. Tomorrow is my first day and I want to make an impression, and when I find the outfit I'm looking for, I smile, knowing tomorrow is going to be the start of something amazing.

Chapter 4

“I’m here to see Mr. Masters?” I ask with as much confidence as I can muster. The nerves are getting the better of me the longer I stand here and stare at a woman who looks like she should have retired years ago, instead of manning this desk.

“Is he expecting you?” she asks, her glasses resting lightly on the end of her nose as her eyes peer at me over the frames.

“I believe he is. I’m his new assistant.”

She makes a noise like this isn’t the first time she’s seen someone come in for this exact same position, and I wonder what’s wrong with this man that he goes through so many assistants so quickly. She picks up her phone, talking softly to whoever is on the other end. She listens quietly, then looks at me, covering the end of the phone.

“You can go on in, dear.” She motions down the hall and I swear she mutters “good luck” as I walk away, but I can’t be sure.

Eyes follow me as I make my way down the long hallway that is cluttered with people who are standing in doorways talking. Every office looks similar, large windows, glass doors and walls, and a single desk and chair. Translucent walls are a managing tactic, one I’m familiar with and hate, but I know it works.

My eyes scan every door, looking for Mr. Masters when I stop dead at the end of the hall where a solid oak door stands closed. A small desk sits just outside, sitting empty, and when I see his nameplate carefully placed in the center of the door, I realize that that small desk will soon be where I spend most of my days.

“Are you the new assistant?” someone asks, coming from behind me. My head turns to see a very beautiful woman who is wearing a pantsuit that would make any man’s jaw drop. Tight fitted and just revealing enough to catch the eye, this woman exudes power and I’m fascinated. When I don’t answer right away, she asks again. “Well, are you?”

I give her my best smile as I nod. “Yes, today is my first day.”

Her eyes soften with pity.

“You poor thing. Well, let me give you a bit of advice.” My eyes glance at his closed door and I wonder what’s so scary about the man behind that door. “What Mr. Masters wants he gets, okay? Never question him, never ask why you are doing something, just do it and for the love of God, do not hit on him. He fired the last one for that.”

My brow furrows at that part.

“Someone seriously tried to hit on him. Their boss?”

The woman nods like it’s a standard practice around here.

“You’ll understand when you see him. But it’s just a warning. He never dates employees.”

I give her a questioning look. Do I look like someone who would go after her boss? I take in my outfit, wondering if the pencil skirt, white blouse, and black heels are telling her something I never intended.

“Noted,” I mutter before walking away from her and toward the closed door. As my fist rises, I take a quick glance behind me and the woman is still there, watching. I give her a tight smile before rapping my knuckles against the hardwood.
