“Charlie-“

“Oh my God, Ms. Moore,” Cathy said from the corner of the break room. “Let the man take you out to eat! You’re forgetting the first rule of working in a school - you never turn down free food.”

Charlie nodded along, glad for the backup.

“Okay, fine!” Violet said, rolling her eyes. “Let’s go get food.”

Charlie couldn’t help the smirk that made its way on his face, and he nodded at Cathy to say his thanks. She seemed oddly pleased with himself.

Clean up didn’t take much longer, and by nine, they were walking to his car to discuss where to go.

“I’m not hungry,” Violet said as they leaned against his car to pick out a restaurant. “I’m fine.”

“But I’m hungry,” Charlie told her. “And honestly, a giant waffle sounds good right about now.”

Violet froze, and it looked like her icy wall of denial was melting. “How dare you mention waffles right now?”

“You know who has good Waffles? Waffle House.”

“Are they actually good waffles?”

“Sometimes, but they’re cheap, and I know how you are about people paying. You’ll feel better if it’s not expensive.”

She glared at him. “That is exactly how I feel, and I hate you for saying it.”

“Come on. I even checked their menu, and they have the blueberry waffle back.”

“What?” Violet exclaimed. “That’s been off the menu for years, and it’s my favorite!”

“Exactly, which is why we need to go before they take it off the menu again.”

“Okay, okay. You’ve convinced me.”

“I’ll drive.”

“Hang on, you can’t do everything-“

He opened the passenger door for her, and gestured for her to get in. She glared at him, but he could see she was tired. Driving was probably the last thing she wanted to do - unless it was back to the house.

“I’m going to pay you back for all this,” she muttered as she got into the passenger’s seat.

Charlie doubted it, but he let her believe it.

The Waffle House was almost empty when they got there. There were only two employees, and maybe one other occupied table.

“I know all Waffle houses look the same, but I feel like we’ve been to this one before,” Violet said when they walked in.

“We have. We came here a few days after we met.” He pointed to the table in the corner. “We sat over there while Liv and Lewis made heart eyes at each other the whole time.”

“Huh. You’re right. How do you remember all this stuff from college? The sleep deprivation must have fried my memory.”

Because you were there. Because, from the moment I met you, a part of me was always aware of everything you were. Even when I despised you, you occupied my mind in ways I could never comprehend, and now we’re here, I want you to take more of me.

The words came unbidden to his mind. For a moment, they terrified him. He had never felt this way about … anyone.

But Violet Moore wasn’t anyone.

“Good memory, I guess,” he said, slowly.
