“College.”

“She has herself a catch.” Cathy winked at him. Charlie opened his mouth to correct her, but she was gone before he could.

Ah, fuck it. He could say something later.

He took some of the extra trays of food to the break room where teachers were chatting. He introduced himself to a few of them and talked for a moment while he put things into the fridge.

They all seemed interested in seeing how Violet was doing, and since he was the only friend they had met, they asked him if her apartment was fixed.

He gave them an easy answer - that it was being worked on and she was staying with a friend. It was nice to see how much her coworkers cared about her.

As he went to get another tray of food, Violet found him.

She looked tired. There had been loads of fun science experiments and outreach activities set up by local vendors. He had heard her running around to make sure everything went well. She was wearing her usual light coating of makeup, but her eyes were dull, and her expression pained.

He also realized she probably hadn’t eaten dinner.

“I am so sorry,” she said, sounding out of breath. “I got so busy with everything, and I haven’t gotten to check in on you.”

“I’m fine,” Charlie said with a smile.

“Really? You’re not bored out of your mind?”

“No,” he said. “I liked meeting a lot of the parents. A few of them are my neighbors actually.”

“Oh, thank God. I know school stuff is super boring but-“

“It wasn’t boring. I enjoyed helping tonight.”

Violet blinked at him. “Really?”

“Yeah, it felt good to be a part of the community for a bit. Besides, I liked watching you do what you enjoy.”

Violet’s cheeks turned pink. “I didn’t do much.”

“Come on. You handled this whole thing.” Charlie grabbed another plate of food. Violet followed him “It was like the wedding but way cooler.”

“It was not cool,” Violet said, shaking her head. “And I need to do something for you to thank you. You’re the one who helped tonight.”

“Let’s do dinner.” He turned to her after setting the food down.

“W-what?”

“Dinner. You and me. We go get food. You can relax after a long night. I’m buying.”

Violet stared at him. “Hang on. I’m supposed to treat you.”

“I’m the one that’s hungry, and I don’t want to eat alone. So, you’re actually doing me a favor by not fighting me on this and joining me.”

Violet must have been exhausted because she struggled to come up with an answer for him.

“I-if I’m going, I’m paying,” she settled on.

“I already offered first. You’ll have to be faster next time, Moore.”

“I’ll seriously pay-“

“Nope. I’m buying.”
