Violet looked like she wanted to ask what he was thinking, but thankfully, a waitress came and got their drink order. When she shuffled away, Violet turned to him.

“Are you okay? Are you sure you’re not regretting coming to a Waffle House when there are other options?”

“I don’t regret it. This is a nice reminder of college.”

“Yeah, it kind of is. It’s so bad it’s good. Like ramen.”

“Yeah,” he said, trying to play it normal. “Cheap food is what I needed tonight.”

More like what she needed.

“About that,” Violet said. “I still feel bad I got busy and wasn’t able to make sure you were okay.”

“I had fun, I promise. Why are you so worried I didn’t? I like being a part of the community.”

“I don’t know. My job is … my job isn’t for everyone. And often it’s forgotten about. I don’t work for a big company doing life changing work.”

“I think the kid you’ve been helping after class would disagree.”

Violet turned a little red. “He’s going through some things.”

“And you’re helping him. You job may not pay a lot, it doesn’t mean it’s not important, Violet.”

Violet smiled. “How did you know exactly what I needed to hear?”

“Lucky guess.”

Because it’s you.

“On the note of school, I think Cathy is going to assume we’re dating. I should probably correct her.”

“It’s not a huge deal. I think it made it easier for people to understand why some young guy was there.”

“Yeah, most people wouldn’t volunteer at a school event. Even if they’re dating a teacher.”

“Maybe I’m not most people.”

“Yeah, maybe.” Violet bit her lip. Charlie was dying to know what she was thinking. “Anyways, you helped. I feel like I should be paying for dinner.”

“Nope. You’re here for me. As a treat.”

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It doesn’t have to, but I did a fraction of the work you did, and I offered. So let me take care of you.”

Violet blinked, and then sat back in her seat. “Fine,” she muttered. “But I’ll get you back.”

You already have.

Their drinks arrived, and the waitress took their food orders. Violet got two waffles, which Charlie didn’t doubt she would wolf down.

He got the same.

“You know, I’m kind of glad I’m staying with you for the time being and not Liv and Lewis.” Violet was stirring her soda, coming alive after finally getting some calories in her.

“Yeah?”

“For sure. I love them, but I’d be staying with a couple. A newlywed couple.” She shuttered. “It’s my worst nightmare.”
