“Yeah…”

Liv was quiet for a moment, but then she sighed. “Lewis asked Charlie to stay away from you tonight. He was trying to avoid a fight.”

Violet cringed. “Then I’m at fault. I started the conversation.”

“You didn’t know," Liv said. “And I know better than to think you guys aren’t going to fight. But we can’t have two separate weddings to keep you apart.”

“I know," Violet said. “I would never ask that.”

“But I guess fighting with him is in your DNA. So, I’m not going to ask you not to fight with him. Just … do it outside? Away from people? Think of it as a wedding gift.”

Violet sighed. She hated herself for even making Liv feel the need to ask this of her.

“Of course. Consider it done.”

“And for planning, how about you come over Tuesday night?”

Violet almost jumped at the chance to hang out with her friend, but then she paused.

“Isn’t that Charlie and Lewis’s game night?” She asked.

“It is, but we can’t let you guys avoid each other and then fight at events. I’m sure Lewis would rather keep you two in different rooms, but I’m tired of it. Let’s do it at our apartment for practice.”

“What - like practice fighting?”

“Practice fighting outside.”

“I don’t know if that will work.”

“It’ll be fine.”

“Liv, I don’t want to ruin your night.”

“You won’t. I know what I’m getting into. Besides, if you don’t fight, then I’ll need help addressing wedding invitations.”

Damn. Liv was going right where it hurt. Her friend knew Violet would never say no if she was needed.

“Okay," Violet said. “We’ll give it a shot.”

Liv smiled. “Perfect - now get home. You need a hot shower.”

Chapter Two

Charlie

Tuesday night was one of Charlie’s favorite nights of the week.

Game nights meant he got some one-on-one time with Lewis, and since he lived alone, rarely saw Lauren and didn’t have many other friends, it was nice to hang out with his closest friend.

Since the wedding was soon, Lewis asked that they postpone game night until after it was over. This Tuesday was the last one for the time being, and he wanted to enjoy it.

Charlie and Lewis had a routine. They would meet up in Lewis’s place and scroll through the nearly unlimited food options in walking distance of the apartment. Then they would pick a game to play for a few hours, settling in to catch up on everything going on in each other’s lives.

His friend’s apartment was tiny. It was a one-bedroom unit on the third floor of a modern living apartment complex. It was only 500 square feet. Sometimes it was a tight fit, but Liv was usually out, so they made it work.

When Charlie got to his friend’s place at five, he saw a car parked in his usual spot. It wasn’t one he recognized, but it still irked him. His routine was slightly off but he chalked it up to a guest of a neighbor and thought nothing of it.

After a busy day, he was more than ready to relax. Unfortunately, he quickly figured out relaxing wasn’t an option when the door opened, and Violet Moore was on the other side of it.
