“Sorry, man," Lewis said, coming from behind Violet. “Liv insisted.”

Violet stepped away, and Charlie fought not to glare at her. Why was she here? Wasn’t it an unspoken rule to keep Violet Moore as far away from him as possible?

“Insisted on what?” Charlie asked.

“A practice run," Liv said from the dining room. “On taking your fights outside.”

Lewis looked at Charlie’s expression for all of one second, and then said, “This isn’t going to work.”

“No one thought to ask me if I was okay with Violet being here?” Charlie asked. Violet looked at Liv questioningly, but Liv only shrugged.

No one else answered.

“We could … reschedule?” Lewis offered.

Violet looked at him with raised eyebrows. He knew her - she wasn’t going to back down, and if he did, she would never let him live it down.

“It’ll be fine," Charlie muttered.

“Alright," Liv said. “If either of you get a taste for each other’s blood, go outside.”

“I’m fine," Violet said. Her stance loosened, and for a moment, Charlie thought she was actually fine. Then she glared at him in her strange, relaxed form, which looked so unnatural that Charlie thought maybe she was a witch.

Violet went back to Liv at the dining room table. She returned to what she was doing as if Charlie weren’t even there.

He was kind of offended.

“Come on," Lewis said. “Let’s play some games.”

“Shouldn’t we find dinner?”

“Violet brought fried chicken," Lewis said. “But if you wanted… I could eat again.”

“How do you know it wasn’t poisoned?” Charlie asked.

Lewis rolled his eyes, but Charlie wouldn’t put it past her.

“There’s a sealed box," Violet said from the dining room table. “It’s got the restaurant label on it and everything.”

Charlie glanced at Lewis, who looked a mix of worried and hopeful. Was this a test to see if he would lose his mind? Was this for the wedding?

“Fine," he said, not wanting to lose. “I think I’ll have some. Thank you, Violet.”

For a moment, Violet tensed, as if the words were mean. Then her shoulders slowly relaxed and she looked halfway normal.

Liv looked impressed.

Lewis still looked worried.

Charlie spared one last glance at Violet before he got a plate of food. He didn’t imagine Violet made much money with her job, but at least she had gotten chicken from one of the best places in Nashville. It was somehow still fresh too.

He ate quickly, and chatted with Lewis, carefully avoiding topics Violet would interject on. His best option was the bachelor party. Charlie had been asked to plan it since he was Lewis’s best man. The current plan was a relaxing Saturday night with their friends. Elijah, another groomsman, had been insisting Lewis have one since it was his last ‘single’ night.

Charlie didn’t know whether or not he wanted this responsibility.

“And I don’t want any strippers,” Lewis said. It was not the first time he had said it. It wouldn’t be the last. Charlie knew Elijah disagreed with him strongly there. “N-not that I don’t respect the profession, but I’m not wanting to look at other woman.”

“Amen,” Liv called.
