Lewis looked disappointed, but not surprised.

Liv shook her head and went after Violet, who had left the venue in a rush.

Charlie looked away, feeling like shit for doing this at their party. He needed to be better - he wanted to be.

But there was something about Violet Moore that always stopped him.

Violet

Her dress was ruined.

Luckily it was cheap, but she had liked it. She hoped to wear it on a date if she ever got one.

But now it was going into the trash the minute she got home, which was going to have to be soon, considering she was cold, wet, and looked halfway insane with the red stain all over her.

Violet leaned against the counter, running her hands through her hair. She felt like she always did whenever she saw Charlie - annoyed … embarrassed … stupid.

She shouldn’t have talked to him. But he had looked so smug - so full of himself, like he always did. He arrived late to their friend’s celebration late and he didn’t even feel bad. His only goal was to look nice by bringing flowers, nothing else.

Only she knew what he was really like.

Violet knew she was still fuming. Whether it was the drink, or the comments about her dress, or his general existence - she didn’t know.

But it was an uncomfortable feeling.

The door to the bathroom creeped open, and when Violet saw Liv, her anger turned into guilt. Her friend didn’t look angry, but she didn’t look happy, either.

Violet felt terrible. She should have been able to keep it together, and now that she was looking back, it would have been easier if she had walked away.

“I’m sorry," Violet said immediately. “I didn’t think … the drink…”

“It’s fine," Liv said, coming in fully. “I figured this would happen when we invited you two.”

Violet looked away, face aflame.

Liv never was mad about their fights. But Violet was terrified one day Liv would get tired of it and walk away. She was already planning separate events for both Charlie and Violet. It couldn’t get much worse.

Liv sighed. “Hey, don’t be upset. At least it wasn’t Charlie who threw a drink on you.”

“I hate her,” Violet muttered.

“I’m with you there. It’s one thing to have you and Charlie in each other’s faces, but she made it physical. I don’t know why he still sees her.”

“Because they both suck.”

Liv winced and Violet let some of her anger go. To her, it was so obvious why Charlie liked Lauren. Fake people loved other fake people. Violet was simply the only one who had seen Charlie’s other side.

“I’m sorry about the stain.” Liv changed the subject, and Violet let her. “What started it?”

“He said I looked bad.”

“Did he?” Liv asked, looking skeptical.

“He implied it.”

Liv sighed and shook her head. “I’m sure some version of that happened. Let me guess, you gave it as good as you got?”
