Violet gave him a bewildered look.

“You said we were changing. I figured I’d offer.”

Violet stared at him, unsure. Then she said, “Okay. I’ll … I’ll think about it.”

Something loosened in his chest. “Pull me aside if you need me.”

Chapter Nine

Violet

That night, the plan was for Violet to stay in the hotel suite Liv had gotten for them near the venue while Lewis stayed in the apartment. But as the rehearsal dinner ended, Violet wasn’t sure if she was still invited.

“If you’re not, come back to my house,” Charlie said, shrugging.

As much as it pained her, Violet needed to talk to someone about what had happened. Charlie was the only one who wasn’t busy or too close with Liv to talk about it.

Violet had told him exactly what she said, and he had listened with oddly rapt attention. He was surprisingly good to vent to.

“I still feel bad for everything," Violet said, taking another sip of her drink. “Liv is different. We don’t fight like this.”

“Yeah? I mean what if it wasn’t Liv?”

“I’d have … snapped right back.”

“Yeah, that probably wouldn’t have helped. But you do deserve an apology.”

Violet looked out into the reception area, where Liv was wrapping up dinner.

“I should say something, shouldn’t I?” She asked.

“Yeah, probably. This would be the best time to before you guys head to the hotel.”

Violet and Charlie were hanging out near the bathrooms, not wanting to draw more attention to themselves. Dinner had been an awkward affair. Liv was busy with her family, and she and Charlie were sat as far away from one another as was possible. So, both of them ate alone.

Violet downed the rest of her drink and handed the cup to Charlie. She took a deep breath and walked out of their hiding corner and into the reception area.

Liv looked up, eyes falling on Violet immediately.

“Violet!” Liv said. “Hey.”

Violet wanted to run, but she ignored the feeling. She needed to face this.

“Hey,” Violet said. “I know you were stressed earlier, and I know in the past Charlie, and I have made things difficult, but this time, it wasn’t me who was in the wrong. I did exactly what you asked of me, and I don’t think I deserved to be snapped at.”

Liv nodded immediately. “You’re right. You’re totally right. I … I took it out on you when Lauren was the one causing problems, because I thought … I don’t know - I don’t think I was thinking at all. And that was wrong of me, so I’m sorry.”

Violet nodded. “Thank you for the apology.”

“And I totally get if you don’t want to help tonight. You don’t have to come to the hotel or anything, I-“

“No, I’ll go to the hotel," Violet said. “I wanted to make sure you still wanted me there.”

“Of course I do!” Liv said. “You’re helping so much, and I need my best friend there to make sure I don’t lose it tonight," Liv blinked, her eyes watery. “I feel so bad for snapping at you.”

Violet opened her mouth, ready to try and brush it off as nothing, but then she closed it. This wasn’t nothing. It had hurt.

“I recently had a conversation with one of my students about how he was taking his frustrations out on people around him instead of dealing with his emotions. And I think that’s what happened tonight," Violet said. “We can’t help but have strong feelings about things in our lives, but we can control how we treat others because of them. I ask if this ever happens again, you try to remember that.”
