Violet opened her mouth, but then closed it. The offense on her face faded and was replaced by guilt.

“She didn’t,” Charlie said. He didn’t like seeing her look so guilty. “We were serious when we told you we were trying to be friends for the wedding.”

“Yeah, no one believed that," Lewis said.

“Maybe you should.”

“Okay, okay. Maybe you were serious about keeping it all in for the wedding, which is … oddly working. Is Lauren gone?”

“Yes," Charlie said.

“She stormed off in epic meltdown fashion,” Violet said. “She looked like a toddler running to their room when they’ve told to go to bed.”

Lewis sighed. “Violet, don’t. You guys made it through tonight without a fight - don’t insult Lauren now.”

“To be fair,” Charlie interjected. “Lauren called Violet both a prostitute and a bitch tonight. I … I think she’s earned a little more than calling Lauren a child.”

“She said what?” Lewis asked, shocked. “She was this mad about Charlie making sure you weren’t homeless?”

“She’s got issues, Lewis,” Violet answered. “I don’t know what you want me to say. I think everyone here is lucky I didn’t return the drink from the engagement party.”

“You’d be in the right to,” Charlie muttered.

“Am I … Am I in an alternate universe right now?” Lewis asked.

“Maybe you are,” Violet replied. “I feel like I am. I mean I stood up for Charlie with his ex-girlfriend.”

“I mean… I wouldn’t call her an ex," Charlie said. In all the time he had been on and off with Lauren, he never called her that.

“I can, and I will," Violet said, rolling her eyes.

“Okay," Lewis said, laughing uncomfortably. “Let’s not ruin your track record here.”

Charlie didn’t feel like they were going to break it, but he let it go - only for his mind to circle back to what Violet had said.

Lauren was his ex-girlfriend.

When had that happened? Was that always what she was? They had dated through college but broke up for a while right when they were all graduating. Ever since then, ever since his rivalry with Violet started, nothing had been the same.

Had they always been exes? Were they ever truly together?

“Anyways,” Lewis said, pulling Charlie out of his thoughts. “Liv wanted to say sorry for snapping at you. She’d tell you herself, but her grandma has had her trapped for fifteen minutes talking about ‘wifely duty’.”

“Oh,” Violet said. “It’s okay - she was stressed.”

Charlie wasn’t sure he heard that right. Violet was letting someone yell at her? She never did that with him, and she certainly hadn’t done that for Lauren just now. Did Liv get a free pass because they were friends?

“Well, she’s not mad at you. She regretted it as soon as it happened.”

“Okay,” Violet said, nodding. Charlie realized she wasn’t mad, she was hurt. And it had been by Liv of all people. He had seen her angry, but she never showed her emotions beyond the anger that came first.

Lewis nodded and told them he needed to get back. Charlie waved him off, turning to Violet fully.

“You okay?” He asked.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine. It’s not been my best night though.”

“This thing will be over soon. If you’re still feeling weird … we can chat about what happened.”
