Liv nodded. “Of course I will. And that’s exactly what happened tonight. God, Violet, you are so much smarter than the rest of us.”

Violet laughed humorlessly. “ I don’t think I would be a schoolteacher if I was.”

“No, seriously. It takes a special kind of person to do what you do and like it.”

Violet didn’t think it took much of anything to teach kids, but the sentiment was nice anyways. Liv hugged her tightly, and the worry Violet had been carrying for hours lightened.

“Do you need any help cleaning up?” She asked.

“Yes, please," Liv said, and Violet turned and got to work.

They got the venue tidied up quickly before they drove to the hotel.

Violet tried to be happy and cheerful the night before Liv’s wedding. They painted their nails, did facials, and watched movies together. The hotel was fancy and beautiful, but Violet couldn’t fully enjoy it all.

She was stressed.

Violet slept on the floor, Liv and Micah getting the bed. She had a fitful, nervous sleep. She couldn’t stop thinking about Lauren’s accusations, her audacity. She couldn’t stop thinking about how sad Charlie looked when he talked about love.

But she had a full day ahead of her. She was supposed to be at the venue early in the morning to be sure everything was set. She had drinks to make, and dresses to pick up. She needed her rest.

Her mind was restless, and it took her a long time to fall asleep. The last thing she remembered was how her name sounded coming out of Charlie’s mouth.

When she woke up only a few hours later at dawn, she wasn’t fully rested, but she had too much to do for sleeping in.

Micah, Liv, and her sister were all still asleep and weren’t set to wake up for a few hours. But Violet had volunteered to get the dresses for everyone and do the last touches on the wedding venue.

She drove to the wedding venue in a daze and sipped on cheap Dunkin Donuts coffee while she made sure everything was working. Eventually, Liv’s sister arrived with Micah and Liv to help get them ready, which signaled Violet to leave to get the dresses.

She was interrupted by a call from Charlie.

“What’s up?” She asked. Hopefully this wasn’t some strange prank that would end their budding peace treaty. Violet didn’t know if she could take that.

“The cake.”

“The cake? Is there something wrong with it?”

“Yes, I … I’m Face Timing you.”

Violet barely had time to move her phone to see when the call changed. For a second, it was Charlie’s face, and then the screen flipped to the cake.

It was supposed to be a three-tiered white cake with the couple at the top. It was traditional and beautiful. But when she looked at the top, there wasn’t the actual couple. It was two men.

“Wha… Did they think they’re a gay couple?” Violet asked.

The screen flipped back around. “They said they were out of women.”

“Women in general?”

“Yes, women in general. Well, kind of. They had a woman who was dragging the groom on a ball and chains. I think the two men was a better choice.”

“Yeah, good call," Violet said.

“I need to find a female figurine for this thing. But I’m also supposed to take Lewis to get his hair cut.”

“So… you need me to?” Violet asked. “I still have to pick up the dresses.”

“I know you’re busy, but I don’t want them to know. Lewis is already freaking out.”
