“Moore, give your parents my condolences,” he said, gritting his teeth. “They need it.”

“Careful, Davis – you just used your biggest vocabulary word in one sentence. Don’t push it.”

“I wish we were better strangers.”

“We could be.”

“You talked to me, Moore. You did this to yourself.”

“And you keep answering me. It takes two to have a conversation. How about you use your ridiculous height to take the high road for once?”

“I can’t when all you do is use your tiny stature to get under my fucking skin. The bar is in Hell, and somehow you are playing limbo with it.”

They were standing close now. Violet’s cheeks were a light pink, glittering like little diamonds in the dim light. He hated that she was so annoying, yet so pretty.

“The only thing I’m playing limbo with is your ability to find a good comeback.”

“Do you even have a soul, Moore?”

“Yes, and it’s confident enough not to be late for shitty flowers.”

“You couldn’t afford shitty flowers.”

“Oh, okay. Since you’re so fucking well off - how about you buy a ticket to a deserted island and stay there? You can take your stupid girlfriend and get the fuck out of my hair, Davis.”

They were chest to chest at this point, and Charlie breathed heavily. He wanted to shut her up. He wanted to shock her with a response so mind-blowing she would finally, finally, be beaten for once.

Then a drink was thrown on Violet’s back.

The other party goers gasped, and Charlie swore he saw a picture taken. Violet turned, looking like she wanted to stab whoever had done that.

Lauren held an empty cup in her hand.

“Get the fuck off my boyfriend, Moore.” Lauren’s tone was ice.

Violet took a moment to seethe, and when she looked back at Charlie, he wondered if she was about to pay her demise forward by dumping something on him too.

“Next time you think of talking to me, remember you can’t finish what you start.”

Charlie wanted to answer, to say something as mean and conniving, but Violet turned and walked away before he could, which was somehow more insulting than her staying.

“Good riddance,” Lauren muttered.

Now Violet was out of his sight, he could think clearly. The haze over his mind loosened, and now he felt bad - like he usually did after she was gone.

“Why did you do that?” He asked Lauren.

“Oh, come on.” Lauren sounded proud of herself. “She insulted you.”

“That was between us.”

Lauren rolled her eyes. “And? You were causing a scene and she was getting way too close. Shouldn’t you be happy I stuck up for you?”

“I don’t think the drink was the way to do it," Charlie said.

“Whatever. She had it coming," Lauren said. “Now, let’s go dance. It’s starting to get interesting now that she’s out of the picture.”

Lauren dragged him to the corner of the venue where people were dancing. He went willingly, but he caught Lewis’s eyes while he did so.
