“I’m freezing,” she said. “Can we go in? We have to face the music sometime.”

“Yeah,” Charlie said, nodding. “You need to warm up.”

He let her arm go, even though it itched to touch her for longer, and followed her inside.

They could hear people mingling, and no one seemed to notice them slip in. Charlie saw Violet glance over at Liv, looking shameful.

“This was my fault,” he said.

Violet rolled her eyes. “No, it wasn’t. It was Lauren’s. Liv’s just mad that it happened.”

Charlie opened his mouth to ask what he could do to fix this, but they were interrupted.

“That was literally the opposite of what we asked you to do,” a male voice said. Both Charlie and Violet turned at the same time and saw Lewis.

He didn’t look enraged, but he didn’t look happy. His face was contorted with disappointment, which was the worst emotion of all.

“This one is my fault. Don’t take it out on Violet," Charlie said.

Lewis’s brows furrowed, and Violet sighed.

“No, that’s not true. It’s Lauren’s fault.”

“Hang on, what?” Lewis asked looking between them, confused.

“Charlie didn’t know Lauren was going to show up. I know you and Liv probably invited her a while ago, but she never made plans with him to be here.”

“Hold on," Lewis said, shaking his head. “You’re not the ones who fought? You’re defending each other?”

“Yes,” Violet said. “For once, we weren’t the drama. I think we’re all surprised.”

“I was kind of the drama,” Charlie said, wincing.

“No, Lauren was all of it.”

“Just Lauren?” Lewis asked.

Charlie sighed. “She found out I’m letting Violet stay with me.”

“You didn’t tell her?”

“Lauren hasn’t talked to me since she stormed off on me at a lunch two weeks ago.”

“Which is why she had no reason to go off like she did,” Violet said.

“Hang on, I’m so confused. So, Lauren was the one who yelled, right?”

“Yes.”

“And you two both were outside with her, and you didn’t pick a fight with each other?” Lewis asked.

“Yes,” both said.

Lewis stared, a look of shock on his face. Then, he slowly shook his head. “Liv told me there was drama between you two and you were outside with Lauren.”

“No, Liv sent me to break up the fight," Violet explained. “Forcefully.”

“Which she immediately regretted, since she figured you would egg it on.”
