“According to him, I’m gaining too much weight.”

“Weight doesn’t matter. You’re you.”

“I can’t tell if this is a compliment or an insult.”

It was a compliment, but he couldn’t exactly call her the most gorgeous woman he’d ever seen without making it weird.

“Don’t worry about him. He’s not worth your time.”

“Well, at least you and I are getting along. We’re not fighting, so I guess I’m fighting with him.”

“He’s not even on the same playing field.” Charlie felt bitterness creep back into him. He didn’t want to be put in any box near Elijah.

“Don’t get jealous, Davis,” Violet said, smirking at him and standing up. “Our fights will always have a dear place in my heart.”

She walked away then, seeming to be in a better mood and returned to putting chairs out. Charlie sat there for a moment, wondering why his heart was racing. He shouldn’t care about Elijah being an ass any more than he did before. But now, he wanted to punch him in the face.

He shouldn’t care that Violet had looked at him with her gorgeous smirk because they hated each other. She was immature and couldn’t handle basic critique.

And yet … it all mattered. It all felt exactly how it shouldn’t, and he didn’t know how to get it to stop.

Chapter Eight

Violet

When the day of the rehearsal dinner came around, Violet was nervous about seeing Elijah again, and whether or not he would want revenge. Lucky for her, she got a text from Liv saying he was ‘busy’ on the night of the rehearsal. He’d still be in the wedding, but she would be so busy that she could avoid him.

Violet spent her night getting ready, putting on a emerald green floor length dress, one similar to the dress she’d be wearing the next day. Her hair was pinned up with delicate curls hanging around her face. She walked down the stairs, still feeling antsy. The last time she had been this dressed up around Charlie, he had said she was so overdressed she was trying to upstage the bride.

Charlie was coming out from his room, messing with the cuff of his navy-blue dress shirt. He was so focused he nearly ran into her. He jumped, almost like he’d forgotten she was there, and then he took in her appearance. Violet felt like melting into the floor at his gaze.

“If you make a comment about me looking overdressed again, I will stick my heel into your eye," Violet said. She couldn’t look at him, so she bent down to pick Roo up and pet her. Cats were a great distraction.

“No, I wasn’t going to say anything. You look … fine.”

Roo wiggled out of her arms, and Violet brushed her hands on the soft material of the dress, making sure Roo hadn’t left behind hair. She adjusted her heel and grabbed her small black purse. When she turned to say goodbye to Charlie, he was staring at her again, his eyes intense with an emotion that she couldn’t name.

If it was anyone else, she’d say he was checking her out.

But she knew that wasn’t the case. Besides, Charlie had Lauren, even if he barely mentioned her.

Even if he probably would never marry her.

But nothing good would come of her mentioning his odd staring, so she ignored it. This was a road neither of them needed to go down.

She needed to get to the venue anyways. All of Liv’s family would be at the rehearsal and she wanted to make a good impression. Everyone Lewis had invited was going to be there tonight too - minus Elijah of course. This was the real deal.

As a member of the bridal party, they were going to run through the motions of walking down the aisle. Luckily, Violet had managed to dodge the dancing class for now but was still paired with Charlie for a part of the first dance, and when they left the aisle. Lewis hadn’t been happy about the change, but apparently Damon, the other groomsmen, had specifically wanted to dance with Micah.

Plus, it meant Violet got to stand next to Liv.

They would make it work.

“I’m going to head out," Violet said. “I have to help Liv with bringing in some of the food.”

“Okay. I’ll see you there," Charlie said as he adjusted his tie.

Violet gave him a wave as she left. She drove to the venue, which was on the west side of Nashville. It was a cold winter night, near Christmas, and she wore a peacoat over her outfit.
