His somewhat girlfriend’s mood was already rubbing off on him. And instead of taking a moment away from the crowds of people, his eyes drifted over to Violet again - the usual bane of his existence. She was on the move, and his heart stopped when he figured out she was heading toward the food table, right where he was. It was like she was drawn to negativity.

To him.

Violet hadn’t noticed him yet, and by the time he got his wits about him, she was standing next to him, her brown eyes meeting his.

Shit. There was no going back.

Charlie bit his tongue. He needed to leave - yet his feet stayed rooted to the spot. Defensiveness and anger, years in the making simmered under his skin.

Violet rolled her eyes and moved past him. She smiled nice, like jasmine and sugar. A person like her shouldn’t smell so addicting.

“You know, I thought of you today,” she said, turning to him. Charlie blinked for a moment, his skin warm. Why the fuck would she be thinking of him? “And it reminded me I needed to take my trash to the dumpster.”

And there it was.

“At least I’m getting taken out more than you are.”

God, he hated how he was when he was around her. He didn’t talk like this to anyone. But once it had started, there was no going back.

Neither of them ever backed down.

“It should probably be by a hitman,” she replied. “Do you know any?”

“If I did - you wouldn’t be bothering me right now.”

“If I’m bothering you, there’s an easy solution. You could leave. Maybe you should have cancelled entirely. It would have spared me some grief.”

“Maybe if you hadn’t walked over here, you could have spared it yourself.”

“I didn’t see you until I was here," Violet said. “Besides, you’ve been looking over at me all night. Don’t think I didn’t notice.”

“The only thing I was noticing is what you were wearing to your best friend’s engagement party.”

“What’s wrong with what I’m wearing?”

“It’s a little rude to try to upstage the bride by wearing the tightest dress you could find.”

Violet’s cheeks turned red, and Charlie enjoyed the fact he had stunned her into silence – even if it was only for a moment.

She always had something smart to say. When he had seen her last – months ago, he had said he was jealous of all the people who hadn’t met her.

Violet had responded only a second later and told him he was human version of period cramps.

It was a never-ending cycle.

“I would never try to upstage Liv!” Violet snapped.

“Did you get that thing at Walmart in the little girl’s section?”

“Target, actually. And it was the adult section. I know you don’t know much about maturity, but it’s where people who mentally grew past fifteen go.”

It was a multi-layered burn. He hated it when she did that. He always spent too long coming up with a response, and by the time he had something to say, she was firing off again.

“And by the way?” She continued. “If you’re going to be late to your best friend’s engagement party – try picking out a bouquet that doesn’t look like it’s from the clearance section of Dollar Tree.”

“That bouquet was forty dollars.”

“Honestly, you probably should have brought your winning personality instead. Oh wait, that’s shit too.”
